The electric Ultra Buggy’s durable design is ready to haul up to 14 cu. ft. or 2,500 lbs. of material in a rugged polyethylene tub. Additionally, the mounted directional and dump switches ensure continuous movement while operating the machine.

FTH hire group continues to invest in Kubota

FTH hire group continues to invest in Kubota: One of the largest plant and tool hire companies operating in the South-East and London has placed an order for 24 new Kubota mini-excavators from main dealer Lister Wilder as part of an ongoing commitment to ensure its customers have access to the latest market-leading equipment solutions. This is part of a total planned investment in 188 Kubota machines in 2023.

FTH Hire Group, which has its head office in Farnborough, has purchased a combination of 1, 3 and 8  tonne models. Rob Watson, Marketing Manager at FTH Hire Group, commented: “We have a fantastic range of new excavators for hire and pride ourselves on supplying the latest and best equipment available for our customers. Meeting their needs is vitally important and that is why we have a large fleet of Kubota machines, which are powerful and reliable to tackle the toughest tasks.

“Running a fleet of 670 excavators across our 10 depots in the UK means we couldn’t operate a successful business if the downtime on our machines wasn’t kept to a minimum. That’s why 80% of our diggers are manufactured by Kubota and backed-up by first class service and after-care from Lister Wilder.”

Investing in growth is a key element of the continued success story of FTH Hire Group, which has recently made a multi-million pound investment that includes opening-up depots in Chelmsford, Scotland and Southampton during the past 12 months.

Rob concluded: “The wider geographical spread of our depots enables us to enhance our business operations, and further improve our ability to meet the needs of our customers – bringing us closer geographically to many more”.

Trencher Hire service just the job

Trencher Hire service just the job: A Toro TRX-16 pedestrian trencher – supplied with operator – dug-out 400 metres of trenching in challenging land conditions in just one and a half days to the delight of customer Steve Stringfellow.

Steve, who lives in a remote farmhouse in Lincolnshire, wanted to lay a new water line from his house to the main water main, as the old existing iron water pipe ran across the farmer’s field and during ploughing often got damaged.

He commented: “We expected some problems with the property being built in 1850. The ground is fairly heavy clay agricultural land, with lots of trees and other obstacles within it. My initial reaction was to get a JCB for the job, but realised that this would have caused a great deal of disruption. I also calculated that around 84 tons of sand would have been needed to backfill the trenches, which would have proved costly both in terms of buying the sand and the labour needed to do the work.

“One of my colleagues, who had used Trencher Hire UK in the past, recommended them. When I contacted the Operations Manager Steve Kingdom, he ran through a few options open to me and I selected a Toro TRX-16 with operator.

“Not only was the trencher cheaper to hire than a JCB but, with its narrow-gauge cutter, could access areas a digger couldn’t. In addition, the narrow neat channels created by the Toro meant that probably only 30 tons of sand would be needed to backfill afterwards – saving both material and labour costs compared to a digger.

“The trencher operator Paul was brilliant and cracked on with the job straight away, but was also honest and upfront highlighting patches of ground where he could not get the Toro through and had to find another path.

“The new 32mm water pipe has been re-routed, but did have to pass over the old one and Paul was able to dig down without damaging it.

Most of the trenching was dug-out to a depth of 650mm and 100mm wide, but in some places adjustments were needed to be made because of large rocks and other obstacles. This meant that in some areas he only dug down to a depth of 500mm, or even as low as 400mm.

“I could not fault the service from Trencher Hire – it was ‘spot-on’. They arrived on time, did the job that they agreed to do and with no excess costs.

Trencher Hire praised by charity

Trencher Hire praised by charity: A vital new conservation project called the Horstmann Trust has been launched in the unlikely location of South Wales to help preserve some of the world’s most endangered species of vultures, many of which are found in Europe, Africa and Asia.

The charity’s CEO Adam Bloch is a passionate conservationist, who is clearly concerned not just about the plight of vultures, but the ever-increasing number of animals joining the endangered species list across the globe, as their habitat is destroyed by man and the effects of climate change become ever more evident.

Trencher Hire UK has played a small but important role in the installation of welded steel fences within the site. Trencher Hire UK supplied a Vermeer RTX-250 on a week-long contract, but Adam said the machine was so efficient and easy to operate that the work was completed in just three days.

He commented: “We dug slots to a depth of 900mm to make sure that animals couldn’t dig under the welded steel fencing we were installing. The trencher made short work of this and backfilling was quick and easy. If we had tried to do the work with a digger, it would have created a whole lot of mess and incurred a lot of time making good afterwards.

“Trencher Hire were really helpful and I couldn’t fault the service. They turned-up at the allotted time, explained how to use the machine and the unit itself was excellent.”

The work of the Horstmann Trust is to develop an ongoing breeding programme with the primary focus on hooded, Egyptian and bearded vultures, as well as the Andean Condor. Adam commented: “There are 23 species of vultures around the world, with the majority facing rapidly falling populations and some facing extinction. We are creating a strong, genetically diverse captive population with some of our birds going on to be released back into the wild, whilst others will be given to other conservation organisations working together in these breeding programmes.

“We have to look to the future and our programme has to be a very long-term one. Many of the vulture species lay just a single egg each breeding season, so producing young can be slow. Condors can live up to 80 years in captivity and don’t reach sexual maturity until they are at least 6-8 years old but, in some cases, can be much longer!”

He is supported in his work by Holly Cale, who is Curator and Head of Research, along with a small number of staff and volunteers.

If you would like to make a donation to support the work of the Horstmann Trust you can contact Adam via email: adam@horstmanntrust.org.

Trencher Hire keeps project costs down

Trencher Hire keeps project costs down: When a customer of broadband and telecoms provider 2020 Networks took the decision to transfer their phone system over to VoIP (Voice-Over Internet Protocol) they could never have envisaged the potential costs involved.

For BT Openreach quoted an ‘eye-watering’ £13,000 to undertake the associated engineering works in order for the new fibre to be installed. Mick Clarke, Partner with broadband and VoIP provider 2020 Networks, said that not surprisingly another way forward was needed and Trencher Hire UK was instrumental in helping cut costs by many thousands of pounds.

Trencher Hire keeps project costs down

“Our customer was located on the edge of an industrial estate in Simonswood near Kirkby in Liverpool and, because their existing broadband connections were so poor, wanted to move over to VoIP, which is the future of telephony.

“We proposed a 150mb leased line, but Openreach quoted over £10k in ECCs to get the fibre in. We therefore decided to arrange the civils ourselves. The cost of hiring a mini-excavator with operator would have been around £2k. However, we found a much more efficient and cost-effective option by hiring a Toro TRX-16 pedestrian trencher with operator from Trencher Hire UK.

“A 170 metres long trench was dug-out to a depth of around 400mm, with 170 metres of 50mm duct being installed, as well as three chambers. The cost of all the civils, which included the hiring of three labourers over a couple of days, cost just £1,500. I also undertook some of the work myself.

“The Toro TRX-16 was a tremendous piece of kit and the work was undertaken in just three hours. The service from Trencher Hire UK was really excellent with clear responses and the unit delivered on time and was extremely good value.”

2020 Networks offers two hosted VoIP and SIP platforms that provide services either on a ‘per channel basis,’ or via extensions with inclusive minutes.

VoIP uses a dedicated broadband line to process voice traffic. In simple terms, it turns your voice into data packets and sends them instantly over your existing broadband network to the person you’re calling. The callee won’t notice anything different, they still hear your voice as normal. The call quality will be the same as, or better than, any existing landline service.

DMC sales & plant hire choose Wiedenmann

DMC sales & plant hire choose Wiedenmann: Limerick business owner, Darragh McCormack, Director of DMC sales and plant hire, has purchased a Wiedenmann Maredo STrac 700 system with four interchangeable heads

Based in Ardagh, in the south west, his recently launched business has gone from strength to strength also including a ground care division which carries out turf projects.

DMC sales & plant hire choose Wiedenmann

DMC sales & plant hire choose Wiedenmann

“Initially, I discovered the kit online and watched You Tube footage. Then I found out Michael Weldon at local Wiedenmann dealer, Seamus Weldon in Kerry was able to supply and it all took off from there,” commented Darragh.

The new Wiedenmann Maredo STrac 700 system is ideal for turf renovations to bowling greens, sports pitches, landscaped areas and, especially, to turf surfaces where tractors cannot access.

Brought to you via your local Wiedenmann UK dealer, the pedestrian Maredo unit has a powerful guiding handle and a set of inter-changeable heads which all come with a working width of 65 cm. A noticeably short turning radius means the rear wheels can adopt a variety of operating positions, while the tools connect effortlessly, cassette style.

Darragh chose four of the six cassettes that make up the system; the Flex- Verticutter which scarifies to 25 mm; a Vibe-Spike aerator which relieves compaction down to 60 mm; the FlexFrase Mower which strips the top layer to 20 mm, which also removes bumps and undulations on goal mouths; the VibeDisc-Seeder, a slit seeder which can dose seed from 0 to -15 mm at as low as 2 g/m ² to 15 g / m²

At delivery, Darragh received full installation training from Andy Kerr, Wiedenmann’ s lead demonstrator and started putting it use on his own grounds.

“It’s really impressive,” commented Darragh. “The seeder in particular reaches 10-15 mm below the surface and is very precise. The scarifier and aerator cassettes will contribute hugely towards plant health removing thatch and organic matter. It‘s a really great solution when a tractor just can’t get access.

“The versatility of the STrac will be enormously helpful for our projects. The heads are easy to change and the way the wheels configure on the pull along unit means it can work close to hedges, walls etc and gives access to areas you would have previously considered unreachable. I can see enormous potential, too, for golf courses and those who have transitions and levels to manage.

“We’ve got lots of uses for it locally, but it will be available for hire across Ireland very shortly. Anyone interested can contact me at DMC on 086 360 6420.

Michael Weldon, Director at Seamus Weldon said: “The clever engineering where you can just add another cartridge to the guiding unit is genius. I know that a new HighSpeed-Corer head is about to be launched, bringing the choice of cassettes to six. For some turf professionals and landscapers, the STrac might be the only system they ever need for surface conditioning.”

Först for hire places

Först for hire places: Först exhibited again at this year’s Executive Hire Show with real presence in the shape of their ST6P woodchipper.

The ideal hire machine for arborists and contractors, The ST6P was well received at the show which overall was very good for Först, generating an excellent turnout. When introduced, the ST6P signalled a new era with a tough and hardy woodchipper that is below the 750kg weight boundary.

Först for hire places

Först for hire places

The first Först to host a petrol engine, the ST6P rivals any diesel competitor for chipping ability and fuel consumption. What’s more, the machine complies with emission regulations, being Stage 5 ready thanks to its petrol engine, so there’s no worry about the law which will affect all diesel machines over 24 horsepower.

It was nice to catch up with existing customers at the Executive Hire Show, says the company, and the exhibition brought many new prospects to their stand. In all, there was a good, positive atmosphere with genuine interest amongst visitors in what Först woodchippers can bring to their hire businesses.
