Why Seed Innovation is the New Frontier for Turf Professionals

Why Seed Innovation is the New Frontier for Turf Professionals: In the world of professional turf management, the ground beneath our feet is shifting. What once seemed like a predictable seasonal cycle has been replaced by a volatile cocktail of environmental and operational pressures. From the scorching droughts of record-breaking summers to the relentless intensity of equally record-breaking rainfall, the demands placed on a sward have never been higher.

At DSV Eurograss, they recognise that the “business as usual” approach to seed selection is no longer an option. As we navigate 2026, the research into seed and turf development has transcended simple aesthetics; it is now the critical foundation for the industry’s survival and sustainability.

Why Seed Innovation is the New Frontier for Turf Professionals

Why Seed Innovation is the New Frontier for Turf Professionals

The Climate Challenge: Breeding for the “New Normal”

Climate change is no longer a distant threat – it is an everyday operational hurdle. For turf managers, this manifests as extreme temperature fluctuations and increasingly restrictive water usage regulations. The traditional “cool-season” grasses that have long been the backbone of UK and European sports turf are being pushed to their physiological limits.

The research at DSV focuses on genotypic variation – the genetic “blueprint” that allows certain cultivars to thrive where others fail. Their breeding programs are specifically targeting drought tolerance, not just through surface-level survival, but through deep-rooting characteristics. By selecting for “smart roots”, plants that can strategically adjust their water uptake from deeper soil profiles during dry spells, they are helping groundstaff maintain high-quality surfaces with significantly fewer irrigation inputs.

Resilience Against Emerging Diseases

Warmer, more humid autumns and winters have invited a new guest list of pathogens to our pitches and fairways. Diseases like Dollar Spot and Gray Leaf Spot, once considered “continental” problems, are now common in more temperate climates.

The traditional reliance on chemical interventions is under pressure from both a regulatory and environmental standpoint. The DSV development pipeline prioritises genetic disease resistance.

Varieties like the newly ranked Flanell and Euromagic aren’t just chosen for their wear tolerance; they are bred to be naturally robust against the fungi that thrive in these changing weather patterns. By building resistance directly into the seed’s DNA, DSV provide the first line of defence, reducing the need for costly and carbon-heavy fungicide applications.

Performance Under Pressure: The Usage Factor

While the climate changes, the expectations of players and spectators remain at an all-time high. Modern multi-use stadia and academic facilities require turf that can withstand “increased usage” from the relentless pounding of feet and equipment, often under low-light conditions or beneath retractable roofs.

DSV’s PRO range is a testament to this research. It features diploid perennial ryegrasses that offer:

  • Rapid Germination: Vital for the tight windows of summer renovations.
  • Exceptional Sward Density: Providing the stability required for high-speed play.
  • Genetic Colour: Cultivars like Flanell and Eurogala provide a naturally deep green hue that looks exceptional on camera without the need for excessive nitrogen fertilization.

A Data-Driven Future

The importance of independent testing has never been greater. DSV are proud that their varieties now occupy top positions on the BSPB Turfgrass Seed rankings. However, their work doesn’t stop at the trial plots. The company is moving toward a more predictive framework in breeding, using genomic selection to identify the next generation of resilient varieties years faster than traditional methods.

“The rankings table is the one everyone wants to top. Our recent results prove that our breeding material is now the best in these trials, but the real victory is seeing these grasses perform in the face of a changing environment,” commented Sam Horner, DSV Seeds.

Conclusion: The Seed is the Solution

As water becomes more precious and the weather more unpredictable, the turfcare industry must look to the science of the seed. At DSV Eurograss, they are committed to providing the professional community with the tools to stay ahead of the curve. Investing in advanced seed technology is not just about a better-looking pitch today; it’s about ensuring we have a surface to play on tomorrow.

Agrovista Amenity Innovation at BTME

Agrovista Amenity Innovation at BTME: Agrovista Amenity will return to BTME 2026 with a line-up that reflects its continued commitment to practical, science-led turf solutions. Visitors to Stand 126 will be able to explore two of the industry’s most talked-about technologies – Attraxor® and Maxtima® – alongside an exciting new addition to Agrovista Amenity’s product portfolio, the Thor robotic mower.

Attraxor® – growth regulation with real-world efficiency

Attraxor® has become a core part of integrated turf management programmes thanks to its proven ability to regulate growth quickly, consistently and across all major amenity grass species. Powered by prohexadione-calcium, the formulation inhibits the gibberellic acid pathway, reducing upward growth and easing mowing demands. Once mixed in the spray tank, the active is immediately activated by water and begins regulating within as little as four hours.

Visitors can speak to Agrovista specialists about how Attraxor® helps reduce clipping yield, increase labour efficiency and produce denser, higher-quality swards. Its strong performance at rates as low as 375 g/ha, its suitability for early-season use, and its compatibility with key fertilisers, colourants, herbicides and fungicides make it an adaptable option for greens, fairways and sports surfaces. Whether the goal is labour savings, improved playability or reducing the dominance of Poa annua, Attraxor® continues to deliver reliable results throughout the growing season.

Maxtima® – flexible, turf-safe disease control

Agrovista Amenity will also highlight Maxtima®, featuring mefentrifluconazole – the industry’s first isopropanol-azole and a major step forward in DMI fungicide technology. Its flexible ‘hook-like’ molecular structure allows it to bind powerfully to target enzymes within fungal pathogens, delivering fast knockdown and long-lasting protection even in challenging, cool or variable weather.

With excellent turf safety, low application rates and up to 28 days of activity, Maxtima® provides broad-spectrum control while remaining a strong rotational partner for resistance management. Rapid foliar absorption forms internal leaf reservoirs, protecting the active from UV and wash-off and supporting extended translocation through the plant. The result is dependable performance against many of the toughest turf diseases encountered across golf, sports and amenity settings.

Introducing the Thor robotic mower

Making its BTME debut, the Thor robotic mower brings fully autonomous, all-electric mowing to professional turf management. Equipped with RTK, LiDAR and AI vision, Thor delivers precise navigation across large areas, cutting up to 36,000m² per day with a 730mm deck. Dual-wheel drive, robust all-terrain capability, auto-return charging and cloud-based mapping make the system a powerful option for sports fields, golf courses, public parks and estates seeking consistent finish with minimal operator input.

With real-time monitoring, safety sensors, a flexible cutting height range (10–100mm) and tablet or app-based control, Thor represents a future-ready approach to large-area mowing.

Agrovista Amenity’s technical team will be available throughout BTME to discuss product strategies, site-specific advice and integrated solutions. Visitors are encouraged to stop by Stand 126 to see the full range in action.

Innovation on Tour – The AriensCo Roadshow

Bringing innovation to Life

The roadshow was all about bringing our products to life. Each stop featured live demonstrations, expert conversations, and personal consultations that allowed for real hands-on experiences. The focus was not only on showcasing product features, but also on discussing everyday challenges, technical details, and service and spare parts needs with dealers, service professionals, and local authorities.

More Than Just a Demo – Real Conversations with Professionals

“Our roadshow was about more than just product demonstrations; it was about meaningful dialogue with the people who use our equipment every day,” said Sam Lewis, General Manager of AriensCo UK. “Performance data is one thing – but the real test is putting the machine into the hands of the user. That’s when you truly see what it can do.”

Two key innovations took center stage, both unveiled earlier this year at demopark:

AS 990 Tahr RC

This new remote-controlled rotary mower proved its capability on steep slopes, where it delivers faster mowing without the need to turn around after each pass. The open-sided sickle mower cuts cleanly in both directions, while the proven cross blade system from the AS 940 Sherpa ensures exceptional cutting power. It easily handles grass and brush up to 1.5 meters high, using two powerful pendulum blades and an overhead cutter bar for high-speed shredding.

Ariens Summit Pro Zero-Turn Series

The new zero-turn models for professionals showed why they are the new stars of the Ariens lineup. With speeds up to 24 km/h, cutting widths of up to 183 cm, and area coverage of nearly 30,000 m² per hour, the Summit Pro 300 and 500 are built for intensive professional use. Durable mower decks, Parker hydrostats, and premium Kawasaki engines reinforce the machines’ robust and reliable design.

Positive Feedback Across the Board

Across all three countries, the response to the roadshow was overwhelmingly positive. Visitors appreciated the chance to experience the equipment first-hand, while dealers took advantage of the opportunity to deepen their product knowledge. For AriensCo, the roadshow also provided valuable insights from direct conversations with customers and users.

“Roadshows help build trust and provide a genuine product experience,” Sam Lewis concluded. “They’ll continue to play an increasingly important role alongside trade shows and conventional demos in how we connect with our customers.”
