No tine to waste

No tine to waste: Productive aeration is as much down to the quality of the tines as it is the machine, and you won’t find better than Toro Tines for making sure no time is wasted when it comes to one of the most beneficial management practices for maintaining healthy turf.

From coring, using hollow tines, solid tine aeration, slicing or spiking, water injection cultivation, deep tine aeration, and ‘linear’ aeration, there are certain considerations that can make the process easier and more efficient to save time and money. And it all comes down to the parts you choose.

No tine to waste

No tine to waste

Using Genuine Toro Parts brings big benefits. Firstly, the tines are engineered and designed to fit the entire Toro ProCore range perfectly, ensuring the best results from an aeration programme. Easily snapping into place or bolting on, with Toro Tines everything is aligned so nothing operational suffers when in use.

Choosing will-fit tines can make aeration a more time-consuming job. Frequently having to replace broken or bent tines, unclogging cores while on the job and collecting awkward core debris are all common side effects of will-fit parts and having to repair damage post-aeration is laborious and hinders return to play. The best way to ensure a speedy recovery for the turf is with clean-cut holes made by tines that boast sharp edges and smooth sides – and that’s something Toro guarantees with its Tines.

Timing is vital when it comes to aeration, and it is important not to be let down in the middle of the aeration programme. The tough design of Toro Tines, including durable brazed tip joints that ensure a strong bond with in-built resistance to separation and breakage, help maintain consistent aeration depths and reduces costly change-out and associated downtime.

Toro has a tine to suit every requirement. With over 150 to choose from there’s something to suit all turf applications, soil situations and seasons. And as always, Reesink ensures parts are delivered within 24 hours of ordering, where stock is available.

As easy as all that is, there is an even easier way to make sure machinery is optimised and ready to work: Reesink’s ReeAssure servicing plans uses all Toro Genuine Parts, removes the unknowns, and makes planning easy when it comes to machinery servicing – all on a manageable fixed cost basis. The assurance that productivity is at its maximum throughout the seasons and costs are tightly controlled brings peace of mind for the ultimate in productivity and performance.

No boundaries for Baroness

No boundaries for Baroness: It’s a recognised fact in cricket that a good groundsman wins matches and is as much a part of the side as a pacy seam bowler or a gifted spinner. After more than 20 years in the game and winning a good few awards along the way, Simon Lee, for the past two years Head Groundsman at the Ageas Bowl home of Hampshire CC, knows his craft supremely well.

He also knows a thing or two about the equipment he needs to keep his wickets and wider grounds up to international standard. The arrival of Baroness mowers in the Ageas fleet on the outskirts of Southampton is, therefore, a significant accolade for a brand that has become a favourite on many golf courses across the UK.

No boundaries for Baroness

No boundaries for Baroness

Now regarded as one of the best cricket grounds in the country, the Ageas Bowl has taken delivery of three Baroness machines from Lister Wilder in recent months. Simon and his team have a five-unit mid-weight LM551B for outfields and an LM56GC pedestrian cylinder mower for pitch preparation. Meanwhile, the Boundary Lakes golf course that is another key element of the wider Ageas leisure offering has a three-unit LM315 greens mower.

The decision to opt for Baroness against other big-name competition was one that Simon did not take lightly. “I spoke to other top-level groundsmen and it came highly recommended by others who have had experience of using them,” he says. “You can read all you like about grass cutting machinery but when the verdict comes from someone you trust then you know you are making a good decision.

“When we demoed the machines, we found the Baroness mowers were cutting tighter and neater than the competition and giving us better presentation at the same level of cut.”

The reality of living with the new machines has matched up to the promise from the demo. “It isn’t just the quality of the cut that everyone talks about and how long the cut lasts,” says Simon. “I really like the way the Baroness machines are engineered – the fact that they are very user-friendly puts a big tick in the box for me given that they are being operated and maintained by staff at different skill levels. That makes life a lot easier for me in managing the whole process.”

Common to all the Baroness machines is the approach to the cutting cylinders, which are individually balanced before being installed and with a heat treatment process ensuring that the cutting edges of both cutting cylinders and bed-knives stay sharp and true.

The LM551B with its 45hp Kubota engine is equipped with a 22-inch standard reel along with optional mower units and accessories, allowing users to create the best configuration to meet their own turf conditions. The forward and backward slide function of the rear cutting units increase contour following whilst minimising uncut turf.

The pedestrian LM56GC is amongst the lightest in its class, but is very solidly built, with high manoeuvrability and a solid 5-year warranty as standard. Like other Baroness mowers, it is completely gear-driven and hence much easer to maintain and more durable than competitors driven by belts or chains. Equipped with bi-directional front grooming reel, de-thatching reel or brush (all of which are changeable in five minutes), you effectively get a complete turf maintenance system for the price of one mower.

The LM315GC is available in 7, 9 or 11-blade reel options, with bed-knives from 1.5mm to 5mm thickness. Cable drive to the cutting units eliminates potential hydraulic oil leaks where they are most likely to occur.

Particularly important to Simon is the back-up he gets to ensure that each of his machines performs at is best and that any problems are quickly dealt with. He has been very impressed by the support he has received to date from Lister Wilder’s Area Sales Manager Graham Merritt and from his Baroness Area Manager Luke Collins.

“They have been fantastic and have helped us every step of the way,” says Simon. “If you call them with the very tiniest issue they are there straight away. It’s the first thing you want with a dealer that is new to you because it means you can build a relationship that works.”

No range anxiety at Trent Bridge with Dennis

No range anxiety at Trent Bridge with Dennis: The unrivalled battery power of the new Dennis ES-860 cylinder mower is impressing at Trent Bridge, home of Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club.

For many years, turf professionals have been choosing Dennis for their superb cut quality and reliability, and recently the company introduced the next generation of its mowers. The new and exciting E-Series is a range of battery powered mowers that are no compromise alternatives to the range of petrol machines.

The E-Series range was built to offer ultimate performance that helps professionals meet sustainability and environmental initiatives, reduce carbon footprint, emissions, running costs and noise without any range anxiety.

Hugh Beesley, an Assistant Groundsman, and one of two dedicated mowing operatives at Trent Bridge, revealed why he felt the E-Series would be a good fit.

“Approximately 90% of the equipment here is petrol and fuel focused,” he said. “Trent Bridge needs to, and wants to, do better in terms of being green and we saw this as a great first step in the right direction.

“Also, with the petrol issues and the prices of fuel becoming more and more expensive, we thought it made sense. Quite often, multiple journeys to the petrol station would be made on a single day. Therefore, the purchase of battery powered mowers is a long-term commitment to decreasing the fuel costs here.”

In their quest to find the ideal battery powered mower, Head Groundsman Steve Birks arranged for various brands to be demonstrated at Trent Bridge. Hugh claims there was one which stood out to the entire grounds team.

“Steve made the final decision but collectively we all decided on the one we liked best,” he said. “We all felt that the Dennis ES-860 would suit our routine better than the others.”

This 34” battery powered turf management system delivers maximum versatility and the range of 13 interchangeable cassette options provide a solution to many day-to-day maintenance tasks such as cutting, scarifying, brushing, slitting and verticutting.

Furthermore, traditional G860 cassettes will also fit the ES-860, meaning that customers will not have to purchase additional cassettes.

A robust LCD keypad screen is an integral feature of the handlebar console providing the operator with a multitude of information options including speed, clip rate, service checks, lifetime running reports and battery information.

Trent Bridge purchased two Dennis ES-860’s and Hugh revealed that one of the main reasons for choosing them was due to the superior battery power.

“We can comfortably mow the entire cricket outfield twice on just one charge with the Dennis ES-860,” he said. “They have been in use consistently for a couple of months and we haven’t run them down to zero – even at 40%-50% we can still cut the whole outfield. It is great because you know you won’t have to start mowing and then stop to put them on charge. The ES-860’s give us the confidence to just keep on going.”

Hugh also praised the simplicity and the finish of the ES-860 and claims that the players have benefited from the low noise levels.

“Simplicity is key because we have so many other jobs to do,” he said. “We need everything to be as streamlined as possible and we can’t afford to spend time on getting used to complicated equipment. Our previous mowers were very mechanical and heavy. The ES-860’s are much lighter and easier to understand. Someone can become a natural on them in no time at all.

“I love how the mower glides across the outfield and when you get to a corner you know you can just turn so easily, it is the smoothest machine I have ever used. You feel so safe and secure using it. The presentation it provides is perfect every time as well.

“The ES-860’s are so quiet, it is unreal,” Hugh continued. “Last year there were times when players were out early around the pitch, and you could tell the noise of the mowers was frustrating them. We don’t have this problem now – the minimal noise is one of the best features of the ES-860.

“The goal is to turn completely electric here at Trent Bridge and the Dennis ES-860’s have given us the confidence to do so.”

No better finish than a Dennis

No better finish than a Dennis: Jay Berkhauer, Head Groundsman for Dartford FC, says that the Dennis G860 cylinder mower is hugely versatile and offers an unrivalled finish.

Jay, who is employed by Jordans Sports Ground Solutions, has been working at Dartford FC’s Princes Park Stadium for three seasons. As an experienced grounds manager, Jay has worked on many sports surfaces including football, rugby and cricket.

No better finish than a Dennis

No better finish than a Dennis

It’s safe to say that he knows his mowers and there’s one that he has used regularly throughout his career.

“I first started using Dennis G860’s when I worked at Crystal Palace FC – and I absolutely love them,” he said. “From all the mowers I have used in my career I am of the opinion that you just can’t get a better finish than a Dennis.”

Therefore, when Jay started working for Jordans Sports Grounds Solutions, he was pleased to be given a Dennis G860 to use at Dartford FC: “Everyone who works on the maintenance side for the company has a G860,” he added.

Relied upon at world class stadia and major tournaments, the Dennis G860 is one of the most renowned cylinder mowers in the grounds management industry. Lightweight at just 166kg it is incredibly easy to manoeuvre and comfortable to operate. The handlebar console houses the controls for the throttle, parking brake, roller drive and cutting cylinder drive.

The mower features a large diameter front roller with an adjustable scraper which has been designed for a precise height of cut control, giving an excellent finish on every occasion. The Dennis G860 also features an interchangeable cassette system to assist with a wide range of tasks such as including scarifying, verticutting, brushing, spiking, and slitting.

Jay claims that this versatility is one of the G860’s best features.

“We have the verticutting cassette, the brush and the cutting cylinder,” he said. “In the summer months when the grass needs thinning out, I’ll use the verticutting cassette. I’ll also use it during renovations, just to give it a thorough clean and to remove any thatch.

“In winter, I’ll use the brush cassette after a game to give the pitch a tidy-up and to remove any debris. If I used a small rotary mower to do this after a game, I would be doing it all night, so the brush has certainly helped me to save time.

“Then of course, we have the cutting cylinder which provides an excellent finish every time.

“For clubs at all levels, including grass roots level, there is no better machine,” continued Jay. “The G860 has everything you need in one mower. It is a 3-in-1 for me and therefore works out to be very cost-effective.

“It’s also very light and easy to operate. It never breaks down and reliability is so important for me.”

Battery power with no limits

Battery power with no limits: Outdoor power equipment specialist EGO has launched a new battery size and charging options to give gardening, landscaping and grounds care specialists increased run-time and no limits when it comes to battery power.

Addressing a common concern with battery power, EGO has launched its CHU6000 Professional Multi-Port Charging Case (RRP £519.00) which is able to charge any combination of up to six EGO portable batteries at the same time. Working with the industry’s fastest charger, the new CHV1600E 1600W Multi-Port Charger (RRP £259.00), a typical 60Ah setup will charge in just three hours meaning users can comfortably work continuously throughout the day.

Battery power with no limits

Battery power with no limits

With a wheeled case for easy loading and unloading from the van, EGO’s Multi-Port Charging Case uses an intelligent power management system that replenishes batteries with the lowest level of charge first, then brings all the batteries up to full charge at the same rate.

Also, part of the EGO Professional range, the new 12Ah BA6720T battery (RRP £529.00) is now the largest in its range and increases run time by up to 20 per cent across all EGO products. With EGO’s 12Ah battery, users can mow up to 1900sqm (almost 8 tennis courts) on a single charge, while offering up to 6 hours of run time for selected hedge trimmers and line trimmers.

Joining six smaller sized batteries in the range, the battery is interchangeable with all EGO tools, and uses patented 56V ARC Lithium™ technology to provide the best balance between required performance and usable power. It also makes use of EGO’s KeepCool™ technology to keep the temperature of battery cells lower for longer, preventing overheating. Internal microprocessors and software control every cell for delivery of optimal power, performance, and runtime.

Vince Brauns, European Product Manager at EGO, said: “Our new 12Ah battery and multiport charger combine to resolve one of the biggest barriers to battery-powered tool uptake in the professional market – battery capacity and speed of charging. With the ability to provide optimum power and performance too, our continual innovation in battery technology mean it is becoming virtually impossible for many professionals to justify their use of petrol-powered tools”
