OAS Help Colmworth Achieve Environmental Excellence

OAS Help Colmworth Achieve Environmental Excellence: Colmworth is a golf club with a difference. Nestled in the tranquil countryside of north Bedfordshire, this inclusive and forward-thinking country estate stands as a beacon of sustainable excellence experience with its forward-thinking approach.

Under the stewardship of mother-daughter duo Julie and Tilly Vesely, this family-run golf course, retreat, and wedding venue has embraced and nurtured an organic approach to golf course maintenance with an unwavering commitment to environmental responsibility. Colmworth is a haven for the eco-conscious golfer.

OAS Help Colmworth Achieve Environmental Excellence

OAS Help Colmworth Achieve Environmental Excellence

Sporting an all-female management team, a rarity in this industry, they pride themselves on redefining the norm with an ethical and environmentally sensitive ethos that guides everything they offer at Colmworth.

Designed by John Glasgow in 1994 the 18-hole, Par 72 course boasts a peaceful, rural setting with a mix of raised tees with stunning views and some challenging water hazards on 4 holes including the signature 12th hole.

Proudly inclusive and forward-thinking, Tilly explains, “Colmworth is the people and planet friendly place to enjoy relaxed golf, great food, celebrate or holiday. Our focus is to be environmentally friendly; it is an ethos that has run through the business from the beginning. We do things differently here; we want to be known for being a friendly, affordable and inclusive venue, as well as a destination and club that focuses on sustainability.”

A key part of this strategy is the clubs’ organic approach to managing the golf course, choosing non-chemical options at every opportunity by utilising biological products from Origin Amenity Solutions. Over a decade ago, the club trialled biological products on the par 3 644-yard-long pitch & putt course; the improvements spoke for themselves with “brilliant results” explains Tilly.  “This led to a fully organic programme being developed for the main 18-hole course and has provided firm, receptive, and disease-resistant surfaces ever since.”

Bradley Jones, Head Greenkeeper, runs a small but effective team delivering the organic strategy by working closely with Julie and Tilly. He adds, “Our golf course is carefully nurtured by organic products. It is best known for playing exceptionally well throughout the winter and following extreme weather conditions.  Despite the British weather, we’ve never had to use winter greens, and we are proud of our excellent drainage, which enables our course to remain open year-round. We are passionate about protecting our planet and utilise organic products on the course.  For over 10 years, we have used biological products from the OAS group and brewed their Symbio microbial ‘compost teas’ to feed and maintain the turf which has also made our greens very strong and resistant to disease.”

Colmworth Golf Club has a programme from OAS compiled in consultation with Brad to

promote soil biology and enhance microbial products. It includes a granular microbial thatch degrading product, OAS Thatcheater. Supporting this are microbial compost teas, fungal and bacterial additives, liquid aeration, and microbial-enhancing bio-stimulants.

In addition to the club’s ‘green greens’ programme, Colmworth’s approach to water management has been said to be ahead of its time. The basis of the drainage system is to gather rainfall collected over the course and direct it through drainage into holding lakes to be used as the water source for the irrigation system. Tilly adds, “We have excellent drainage, which all feeds into the lake on the 12th hole. This then acts as a reservoir for the summer months to keep the greens watered, playable, and healthy.”

Innovative practices such as organic turf management, water conservation, and community engagement have secured the club two prestigious accolades. In the governing body’s centenary year, Colmworth Golf Club won the England Golf Sustainability Project of the Year 2024.

They also emerged as winners at The Golf Environment Awards, held at BTME 2024, being crowned the UK Environment Golf Club of the Year. These awards are for golf clubs in the UK that are leading the way in sustainability across nature conservation, turfgrass management, and waste and water management.

Tilly adds, “Colmworth Golf Club not only exemplifies sporting prowess but also serves as a testament to the power of conscientious stewardship in preserving our planet’s natural beauty. We are passionate about protecting our planet and the awards show that you don’t have to be a huge golf course with a big budget to make the right decisions for the environment.  From installing solar and utilising renewable energy to implementing organic turf care, recycling and re-purposing wherever possible, and supporting local – there is so much we can do, and there is so much more we want to do! I would like to collaborate with like-minded businesses to host corporate days where they can invite their customers to a venue and play on a golf course that showcases that sustainability and the environment matter.”

Colmworth Golf Club focuses on revolutionising the golfing experience with its sustainable ethos. Through organic turf care and water conservation, they’ve garnered acclaim and their approach not only enhances the game but underscores the vital role golf courses can play in environmental preservation.

OAS Products and Formartine FC’s Journey to Gold

OAS Products and Formartine FC’s Journey to Gold: In the rugged terrain of Aberdeenshire, where the winds howl and the rains pour relentlessly, lies Formartine United Football Club, a beacon of grassroots football passion in the Scottish Highlands.

Despite a modest budget and a mere two months of sun (if they’re lucky!), Formartine FC has defied the odds with their pitch, recently bestowed with the prestigious Gold status by the Scottish Football Association (SFA).

OAS Products and Formartine FC's Journey to Gold

OAS Products and Formartine FC’s Journey to Gold

Behind this remarkable achievement is not just hard work and dedication but a revolutionary approach to pitch management, rooted in organic principles and powered by Symbio products, a subsidiary of Origin Amenity Solutions (OAS).

Leading the charge is the Head Groundsman of Formartine United FC Paul Fiske. With 35 years of greenkeeping and grounds management experience, including a 22-year tenure as the former head groundskeeper at Aberdeen FC, Paul’s passion knows no bounds. For the past six years, he has tended to Formartine’s pitch, with unwavering support from committee members and volunteers who share his dedication to excellence.

Formartine United Football Club is a semi-professional Scottish senior association football club currently playing in the Highland Football League but with ambitious plans to make higher leagues through the pyramid system.

Despite operating on a modest budget, the football club based in Pitmedden prioritises the maintenance of its grounds above all else, thanks to a chairman who understands the importance of investing in quality infrastructure and spends more on the pitch than other teams in its league.

Paul’s partnership with OAS dates back 15 years to when he began working with Symbio’s technical representatives. He has a bespoke programme tailored to Formartine’s unique challenges which incorporates a range of biological products including Mycorrhizae Inoculant, Mycrogro fertiliser, Compost Teas and Liquid Aeration, and biostimulants like CMS Shoot and Seaweed.

“Our programme works,” says Paul Fiske. “It is well regarded that our pitch is the best in our league. It is a soil-based pitch with minimal disease. We tweak things as necessary. The changing weather means it is not an exact science. The Symbio Mycorrhizae Inoculant is truly an unbelievable product – It really accelerates grass establishment and speeds up the pitch renovation process. It’s not a cheap option, but the results speak for themselves. With the short window for pitch renovations, every day counts, and the Mycorrhizae Inoculant ensures that we get the job done efficiently.”

Complementing the Mycorrhizae Inoculant is Mycrogro fertiliser, which provides essential nutrients for robust plant growth, and Compost Tea, which promotes soil health and biodiversity. Liquid Aeration, a noninvasive alternative to mechanical aeration, helps alleviate soil compaction by stimulating microbial activity and improving water infiltration, ensuring optimal playing conditions throughout the season.

Navigating the unpredictable Scottish weather, where rainfall has reached unprecedented levels, Paul relies on OAS’s innovative solutions to keep the pitch in play. Liquid Aeration and products like HydroAid play a crucial role in managing water movement and promoting optimal soil health, ensuring that the pitch remains resilient despite adverse weather conditions. “I have needed to use more Liquid Aeration than usual, but it’s important to use it at the right time; I watch the forecast closely and apply products ahead of the weather. HydraAid and Liquid Aeration are fantastic for pulling the water off the surface and speeding up percolation.”

Looking ahead, Formartine United F.C. harbours ambitions of climbing the ranks. Paul reflects on their journey and says “The results speak for themselves. Despite the challenging climate and heavy usage, Formartine’s pitch boasted an impressive 90% grass coverage when the 2023/24 season drew to a close. It’s clear to see that the pitch is actually performing better than some topflight Scottish clubs, even ones in the same region with bigger and better resources and less usage” concludes Paul, “given the usage Formartine gets, it’s a credit to the unwavering support of the chairman, the organic products from OAS, hard work and good working practices carried out with professionalism.”

Formartine United FC is a shining example of what can be achieved with passion, innovation, and a little help from nature. As they continue to defy expectations and chase their footballing dreams, one thing is certain – their pitch will always be a source of pride and envy for many clubs in their league and higher across Scotland.

OAS supports the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal

OAS supports the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal: Origin Amenity Solutions (OAS) has joined forces with photographer Richard Pinches and Grounds Maintenance contractor Groundtel Ltd to create a giant poppy in support of the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal.

The giant poppy has been painted on Mills Meadow in Henley-on-Thames to launch the 2023 Poppy Appeal. It has been drawn by OAS’s robotic line-marking machine and then filled in by hand using a backpack sprayer using IMPACT paint.

OAS supports the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal

The idea came from drone operator, Richard Pinches, who was commissioned by Henley Town Council to photograph a King’s Cypher that was painted in the same location for the King’s Coronation in May.  Richard has been a keen supporter of the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal and poppy collector ever since the death of his father in 2016.

Simon Hughes, Line Marking Sales Manager for Origin Amenity Solutions explains, “Richard approached me for help, and we were only too delighted to donate the necessary machinery, paint, and time needed. I programmed the GPS-guided robotic line marker to paint the poppy outline and then Danny Perkins from Groundtel Ltd. infilled using our IMPACT paint in white, red, and black.

The ability to mark out custom logos and designs is the latest feature on the TinyLineMarker Pro X robotic line marker distributed exclusively in the UK by Origin Amenity Solutions.

The robots are designed to spray ready-to-use paint technology such as the IMPACT range. To give an idea of the efficiencies, the machines use as little as 1.1 litres of paint per standard-sized football pitch and eliminate the messy, time-consuming inconsistencies associated with dilutable concentrate paints. With significant time and money-saving benefits robotic line markers are increasingly valued as a smart investment.

Simon Hughes adds, “This revolutionary feature has been heavily requested, and we are delighted with how well received it has been. It is fantastic to see how our customers are using it and I’m delighted with how well the poppy has turned out. It looks stunning.”

Armistice Day, or Remembrance Day as it’s best known, marks the day that World War One ended in 1918. A two-minute silence is held across the country at 11 a.m. on the 11th day of the 11th month to remember those who have died in any conflict.
