Thieves Rip Out Artificial Turf: Thieves have ripped out specialist artificial turf from a £33,000 training centre used by young cricketers.

The nets were set up at Porthill Park Cricket Club around a month ago following a fund-raising drive.

But yobs cut up one of the lanes used to help build youngsters’ confidence in the sport.

Since news of the theft broke, former England captain Michael Vaughan has even Tweeted his support saying: “This is disgusting…please someone let the club know who’s done this.”

Chairman Craig Chorlton was left baffled after discovering a piece of artificial turf measuring 20ft by 6ft was missing.

Craig, of Wolstanton, who has been involved with the club for 15 years, said: “It is specialist flooring and the part they targeted is used by the young cricketers. I don’t know what they will do with it.

“The gates for the nets were locked and I think whoever has done it must have come to have a look before doing it.

“It’s very bizarre how they have cut out one section – but for us we need to have the whole thing re-done. There must have been at least two thieves due to the weight.

“It is used to get young cricketers used to hard ball. This type of artificial turf can’t be bought in the shops and it is specialist.”

The club raised around £5,000 for the nets by holding events and applying for grants from Red Industries and local councillors.

While the nets cost around £33,000 a further £4,000 was spent to make them secure.

Craig says the club has worked hard to support the community and Porthill now boasts 30 junior sides, five senior, a women’s, three for girls and a softball side.

He said: “We also put on sport sessions on the car park as there was some anti-social behaviour in the area over the winter and we wanted to help with that and we are a real part of the community.”

Fellow clubs across North Staffordshire have been quick to back Porthill.

Craig said: “The support we have received has been amazing and I have been told how our Tweet has been shared hundreds of times. The other clubs around the area have been fantastic too.”

Groundsman Ian Plant has also been left disappointed by the theft, which happened overnight on Sunday (May 19).

Ian, mayor of Cheadle, said: “I feel disappointed for the people at the club who worked to get this set up and for the children who use it.

“The nets are a really good stepping stone for young players and now because of this they can’t practice.”

A Staffordshire Police spokesman said: “Officers were called to a report of theft at Porthill Park Cricket Club at 10.45am on Monday, May 20.

“It is believed approximately 20ft of turf had been cut off and stolen. Inquiries are on-going.”

Vandals Leave Pitch Out Of Action: An east end football club which encourages men over 30 to get fit is out of action until next year, thanks to heartless vandals who ruined the pitch.

Glasgow Titans have a pitch in Tollcross, and use it for training and games as part of a weight loss programme.

The club shared the bad news on Facebook that the pitch is now unusable, thanks to deep track marks caused by an off-road vehicle.

The post reads: “It’s a huge blow for our club as we worked very hard to find a settled home where the club could train and play our home games. With enquiries being made for funding looking to improve the facilities around the pitch, it’s frustrating to say the least that this needs to be put on hold due to this act of mind-numbing vandalism.

“Given what was used to damage the pitch, it had to come from within the very community we are helping which is completely baffling as to why someone would do this.”

The Glasgow Titans was set up to get east end men back into exercise, promoting weight loss and a boost to mental health, and hoping to tackle low life expectancy in some areas of the city.

With no owners or shareholders to fall back on, there’s no set date as to when the Titans can return to their pitch – but members have called upon local businesses and organisations to help where they can.

The Facebook post ends: “The club will fulfill all our home fixtures and will continue to schedule more if the opportunity arises. It just means we have to move around a bit, pay a bit extra, until the pitch can be repaired next year. No one will stand in our way in our battle to improve our health.”

SALTEX Outdoor Demos A Sell Out: Ahead of the 73rd anniversary of SALTEX at The NEC, Birmingham on 31 October – 01 November, show organisers have reported a significant increase in pre-show visitor registration.

Since moving to the NEC, the show has grown steadily in terms of exhibitors, floor space and visitor numbers and current figures for this year appear to hint towards SALTEX 2018 continuing the trend.

Visitor pre-registration for 2018 is at an all-time high with current figures 11% up on last year which reflects not only the quality of the show but also how accessible the NEC is. In the post-show survey, SALTEX 2017 attendees said that the venue, and convenient dates were key reasons behind their decisions to attend the FREE event. Located in the centre of the UK, whether you are travelling from overseas or within the UK, the NEC is easy to get to by car, rail or air.

Visitors from 41 different countries have already registered for SALTEX 2018. The majority will be travelling to the NEC from various parts in Europe but according to pre-registration data there will also be a large proportion of visitors attending SALTEX from as far as the likes of Australia, the USA, Japan, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia – to name but a few.

Visitors will no doubt be looking forward to an impressive line-up of world-class innovation from over 300 exhibitors on the show floor. Cricket Groundsman 50 Not Out

Cricket Groundsman 50 Not Out: A fun-filled evening of cricket was held at Duncombe Park Cricket Club on Friday, July 20.

A match between ex-players, known as The Legends, who were captained by Pete Humpleby, took on the current players, captained by Jonathon Leckenby.

Following the match, a presentation of an engraved tankard was made to Alan Kent for 50 years as groundsman.

The chairman thanked Alan, on behalf of the club, for all his dedication and hard work over the years.

Thanks went to everyone who took part or supported the evening in any way.
