Symbio expands technical team

Symbio expands technical team: Soil biology specialist Symbio has continued the expansion of its technical team with the appointment of Gary McKenna and Richard Sheppard.

Gary is a former golf course manager and Symbio customer who is an active part of the greenkeeping community in Scotland. Educated at Elmwood College, he brings more than two decades of turf management and tournament experience to his new role providing technical support to customers in the North and East of Scotland.

Richard returns to the company as a result of his long-held passion for sustainable turfgrass management. A long-term advocate for a biological approach, he began his career in greenkeeping before completing qualifications in turf science and sportsground management and an Open University degree. Richard will be supporting a wide range of customers across Northern England.

Established in 1990 and now part of Origin Amenity Solutions, Symbio provides the correct combination of biology, chemistry and physics for fine grass growth with fewer chemicals and less disease, physical disruption, management time and cost. It was the first company to develop a range of industry-changing products, including Thatch Eater to convert thatch to plant food, mycorrhizal fungi to promote perennial grasses and in some cases more than halve fertiliser use; Liquid Aeration to oxygenate the rootzone, and compost teas to restore life to chemically-damaged and compacted rootzones.

New recruits join amenity team: Grass seed breeder and producer Barenbrug UK has boosted its amenity team with the appointment of David Howells and Joshua Thomason.

David Howells is Regional Sales Manager responsible for the North of England and North Wales.

A keen gardener and Leeds United supporter, David began his career in the British Army, completing his greenkeeper training at Askham Bryan College and working as a greenkeeper and course manager at Harrogate and Shropshire Golf Clubs, including responsibility for the construction and grow-in of a 27-hole golf course, before moving into technical and sales support. He joins Barenbrug after his most recent role at Headland Amenity where he provided technical, sales and agronomic support to course managers and head groundsmen at golf courses, premier football venues and training grounds in the North of England.

He comments: “The increasingly high expectations for quality sports surfaces, environmental restrictions for part or full withdrawal of amenity products and climate change have compounded abiotic and biotic stresses within the grass plant. For turf managers, introducing high quality grass species and cultivars has never been as important. Barenbrug has been a major grass seed producer backed by extensive investment in research and development and is renowned for high-quality products that meet the challenges that greenkeepers and groundsman face. A focus on sustainability has also resulted in over two thirds of its seed grown in the UK. Whether golf course, winter sports pitch or turf grower, I’m looking forward to meeting customers, helping them improving their sward composition and tackle disease, wear, or specific issues in particular locations. Joshua Thomason is Regional Sales Manager covering South England and South Wales.

A recipient of the prestigious R&A Greenkeeping Scholarship and Myerscough College graduate, Joshua’s career has included course manager and greenkeeper roles, with major tournament experience at exclusive golf venues in the UK, Austria, USA and Australia including the new West London Links opening in 2023, Roehampton and Royal Wimbledon Golf Clubs. With significant international expertise in modern agronomic techniques, experience in differing climates and with warm and cool season grasses, he also looks forward to supporting greenkeeping teams to further improve their playing surfaces.

New recruitment in BASIS team: BASIS has expanded its workforce with the recruitment of two new employees.

Jade Prince and Tanya Kesterton join the team to take on two new roles as business development executive and head of digital learning, respectively.

Jade has a background in environmental science and is FACTS qualified.

“My role centres around promoting the courses, boosting membership and building the network around BASIS’ target audience”.

As part of her role, Jade wants to focus on raising awareness of the courses that BASIS offers to the younger generation. “I am already working to develop the business through recruitment of new members, creation of new relationships and networking with other industry organisations.”

Reflecting a move towards delivering more digital courses, Tanya Kesterton joins the BASIS team as head of digital learning. With a strong background in education and IT, Tanya is looking forward to building BASIS’ digital education capability.

“I want to look at supporting the current members and work on reaching a wider audience through our digital platforms,” she says.

BIGGA announces volunteer support team: The return of The Open Championship this July will see BIGGA members from all over the United Kingdom leap into action once again as the BIGGA Volunteer Support Team takes responsibility for ensuring the Royal St George’s bunkers are in top condition for the world’s best golfers.

Following the rescheduling of the 149th Open Championship due to the COVID-19 pandemic, BIGGA is delighted that the R&A has requested the assistance of its members in the staging of the event. Members who were selected for the postponed championship in 2020 have been invited to participate this year and are now looking forward to another incredible week of championship golf.

This will be the fourth time a volunteer team of BIGGA members has assisted at an Open Championship at Royal St George’s, having also taken part in 1993, 2003 and 2011. The bunkers at Royal St George’s Golf Club are among the most famous in golf, with the giant ‘Himalaya’ on the 4th hole providing an intimidating test, not just for the golfers who land in the hazard, but also the members of the support team who will recreate its condition afterwards.

Every full BIGGA member is eligible to apply for a place on the support team and those who are selected are given unprecedented access to golf’s greatest championship, supporting every match with bunker raking duties.

BIGGA CEO Jim Croxton said: “A place on the Open Support Team is one of the most exciting opportunities we offer our members and I’m delighted that after such a dark year we were able to extend the invite to those members who missed out in 2020 due to the postponement of the championship. The Open remains for me the world’s greatest golf tournament, we’re thrilled to be able to support the R&A in its staging and everyone at BIGGA is looking forward to giving our all and playing our part in ensuring the 149th Open is Royal St George’s best yet.”

The BIGGA Volunteer Open Support Team are provided with accommodation, subsistence and uniform for the event. Members of the support team may also be called upon to assist Course Manager Paul Larsen and his team with early morning preparation work and other duties during the week. Restrictions are expected to be in place as a result of the coronavirus pandemic and any necessary adjustments to working practices will be made clear to BIGGA members ahead of the championship.

The 149th Open tales place from 15 to 18 July 2021. Applications for the BIGGA Volunteer Support Team for the 150th Open Championship at St Andrews will open later this year.
