Bernhard Academy to sponsor technician: The Bernhard Academy is excited to announce its sponsorship of an equipment technician for the upcoming 125th US Open, held at the prestigious Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania, USA. The Bernhard Academy is working in partnership with the Turf Equipment Technicians Organisation (T.E.T.O) to bring a new opportunity to the group. T.E.T.O has been created to improve recognition, opportunity, communication and education across our industry whilst creating valuable support networks.

The Bernhard Academy is presenting this unique opportunity, inviting experienced equipment technicians from the UK and Europe to apply for a single, coveted spot on the volunteer support team at Oakmont Country Club next June, where they will gain firsthand experience working on golf’s biggest stage at the 125th US Open.

“This is the opportunity of a lifetime for an enthusiastic equipment technician”, commented Sami Strutt, Education Director for the Bernhard Academy. “To prepare the golf course that will host the game’s best players provides an excellent chance to apply their technical skills, as well as getting a front-row seat to the US Open.”

The successful applicant will possess a minimum of three years’ experience as an equipment technician in a sports turf setting. Bernhard’s knowledge and excellence will be shared with the lucky volunteer, when they attend a training workshop at a Bernhard Academy venue, to ensure that they are fully prepared ahead of their trip to Oakmont. Applicants must be part of T.E.T.O to be eligible. Shortlisted candidates will be selected for online interviews, in the week commencing 9th December.

This sponsorship underscores the Bernhard Academy’s commitment to professional development and excellence in turf equipment management, offering technicians a chance to elevate their skills and gain international recognition. The Lawn Association team know that for the healthiest lawns, there are always jobs that can be carried out no matter what the season.  David Hedges Gower, the chairman of the Lawn Association, offers suggestions below on how to look after your lawn at this time of year.

Preparing for Winter – If It Ever Arrives!

Barmy degrees at the end of November—who’d have thought? I’ve seen many a gardener in short sleeves, hard at work well into December. Our autumns and winters are clearly changing, and with them, our gardening habits. But there’s a challenge in this shift.

TV shows and magazines often suggest our gardens shut down over winter. So what are we supposed to do with a warm spell in November—get out the deck chairs? And grass? It’s often overlooked, yet it never really stops growing. In fact, winter preparation and a bit of care during the coldest months can make all the difference for your lawn.

Many plants and shrubs go dormant for winter, so we cut them back and protect the vulnerable ones from frost, calling it a day. But grass is different. Your lawn consists of millions of individual plants, each with a delicate root system. If you think about it, you’d want to throw a thermal blanket over it at the first sign of frost!

Fortunately, no need for such drastic measures. Grass may be small and delicate, but it can survive even tough winters with a bit of support.  In fact, I believe a lawn’s appearance mid-winter is a true measure of good lawn care. It’s easy to make grass look lush in summer with a little fertilizer, sunshine, and regular mowing. Real lawn care, though, is year-round. This season, here are a few simple steps to get your lawn ready for winter—if it ever comes:

  • Aerate if conditions are good. Hollow-tine aeration is ideal, and don’t forget to clear up those cores. You don’t need to fill the holes—they’ll help moisture move through the soil.
  • Apply ferrous sulphate sometime over the next few months. It will lock in valuable nutrients, strengthen the turf, and deter moss.
  • Keep mowingif the grass is growing. Just make sure the blades are sharp, and don’t cut too short; your lawn will actually benefit.
  • Continue edging, shaping, and tidying. Use turf rather than seeds for repairs for faster results.
  • Remove fallen leaves. Leaves create a warm, damp environment that can encourage diseases and dead patches. While you’re at it, inspect any overhanging trees and shrubs, and prune them back to help those struggling shady areas.

And finally, when sub-zero temperatures do arrive, avoid walking on a frosty lawn. You’ll only bruise the grass. Instead, make a cup of tea, sit by the fire, and review last year’s lawn care, planning any tweaks for next season.

Despite a modest budget and a mere two months of sun (if they’re lucky!), Formartine FC has defied the odds with their pitch, recently bestowed with the prestigious Gold status by the Scottish Football Association (SFA).

Behind this remarkable achievement is not just hard work and dedication but a revolutionary approach to pitch management, rooted in organic principles and powered by Symbio products, a subsidiary of Origin Amenity Solutions (OAS).

Leading the charge is the Head Groundsman of Formartine United FC Paul Fiske. With 35 years of greenkeeping and grounds management experience, including a 22-year tenure as the former head groundskeeper at Aberdeen FC, Paul’s passion knows no bounds. For the past six years, he has tended to Formartine’s pitch, with unwavering support from committee members and volunteers who share his dedication to excellence.

Formartine United Football Club is a semi-professional Scottish senior association football club currently playing in the Highland Football League but with ambitious plans to make higher leagues through the pyramid system.

Despite operating on a modest budget, the football club based in Pitmedden prioritises the maintenance of its grounds above all else, thanks to a chairman who understands the importance of investing in quality infrastructure and spends more on the pitch than other teams in its league.

Paul’s partnership with OAS dates back 15 years to when he began working with Symbio’s technical representatives. He has a bespoke programme tailored to Formartine’s unique challenges which incorporates a range of biological products including Mycorrhizae Inoculant, Mycrogro fertiliser, Compost Teas and Liquid Aeration, and biostimulants like CMS Shoot and Seaweed.

BIGGA invites greenkeepers to share their opinions

BIGGA invites greenkeepers to share their opinions: The British and International Golf Greenkeepers Association (BIGGA) is this week launching a survey that invites all greenkeepers – whether members of the association or otherwise – to share their opinions on the structure and role of the association itself.

The survey is intended to ensure that greenkeepers are at the heart of plans to develop the activities and structure of BIGGA and ensure it is well-placed to meet the challenges of future years.

The survey is the first step in a consultation phase that is being undertaken in collaboration with Sporting Insights, the leading sports marketing research organisation. The survey can be completed here.

The questionnaire will give all greenkeepers the opportunity to have their say about BIGGA itself, whether positive or otherwise. Questions will cover the BIGGA membership offering, the value of benefits and initiatives that are currently available and how these might change. There will also be questions on membership categories, the role of volunteers and how BIGGA advocates for its members within the industry.

Those who complete the questionnaire will be entered into a draw to win £500 in Amazon vouchers.
