Support Greenkeepers tackling driest spring in 70 years

Support Greenkeepers tackling driest spring in 70 years: The British and International Golf Greenkeepers Association (BIGGA) is calling on golf clubs and golfers across the UK to support their members as we face our driest spring for decades.

Following some exceptionally wet recent winters, the spring of 2025 has brought a stark contrast. According to the Met Office, rainfall across many regions has been at historic lows. Wales recorded its driest March since 1944, while East Anglia experienced its second-driest March on record. With May showing little improvement, greenkeepers are under extreme pressure to maintain playing surfaces amid growing turf stress.

David Byron, Head Greenkeeper at Thorndon Park Golf Club in Essex, said: “It’s very, very dry. It’s the driest start to spring in nearly 70 years. We’ve had almost no rain, and what we have had has come in just one hit.

“In our fairways, we’re down to about 3–4% moisture content. Normally, you’d want 10 to 15% for the grass species we have.”

These conditions are presenting major challenges for turf recovery and maintenance. Areas without irrigation, such as fairways, are suffering, while teams attempt to preserve greens and tees with limited water resources.

Royal Aberdeen’s Course Manager, Richard Johnstone, said he had recorded just 11mm of rainfall between April and early May: “We’re experiencing extreme weather patterns. There’s no longer a balance. Instead, we’re seeing one extreme or the other – either constant pouring rain or complete drought.

“There doesn’t seem to be much consistency anymore, and that presents some big challenges.”

Paul Woodham, The R&A’s Agronomy Lead for Europe and the UK, noted that warm days combined with cold nights have disrupted seasonal growth, resulting in stressed grass and delayed recovery from winter damage.

Clubs are encouraged to communicate openly with their members, sharing insight into current conditions and course management strategies. Transparent engagement and social media updates are key tools to foster support.

“Our advice to clubs is to engage in professional dialogue with your Course Manager, set agreed objectives and show open support for your team of greenkeepers,” said BIGGA’s CEO Jim Croxton.

“They will be much more motivated and determined to overcome these challenges with strong support from their members.”

“As course managers, it’s our responsibility to communicate and educate,” said Johnstone. “We need to use various channels like social media, blogs, and other platforms to help people understand the current conditions and our management approach.”

EcoBunker Celebrating 10 Years in Business

EcoBunker Celebrating 10 Years in Business: As 2024 draws to a close, EcoBunker Ltd the industry leading innovator of synthetic bunker wall technology is celebrating its 10th year in business supporting the rapidly evolving golf industry.

Starting out in 2014 with an injection of funding and the creation of a reliable supply chain, founder Richard Allen was able to grow the invention he had made five years earlier into the sustainable business he knew it could be. EcoBunker has since grown into a hugely successful international business that has engaged in many hundreds of projects covering every major golfing territory.

“It’s been an incredible 10 years, and I’d like to thank all of the courses, designers and golf industry professionals without whom we wouldn’t have become the business we are,” commented EcoBunker founder, Richard Allen. “Challenging the way things have always been done is a hugely difficult task, so I will always be grateful to everyone that placed their faith in us and what we were trying to achieve.”

Key milestones in the past 10 years have included the development of EcoBunker Advanced, a cement modified backfill technology that cut the shipping weight of EcoBunker in half, enabling the growth of the international business; the design of two further technologies – EcoTec bunker liners and AquaEdge synthetic water edging; and most recently, the investment in EcoBunker’s own production facility, that gives more control over R&D and product testing, a process that has already produced the next generation of EcoBunker Advanced that should be ready for mass production before the end of the year.

“When I invented synthetic bunker edging technology, I knew that it could change the game,” concludes Richard. “We can slash maintenance costs, quadruple the lifespan of revetted bunkers and provide visually stunning additions to golf courses that keep on delivering a fantastic experience for golfers year after year. I’m incredibly proud of all we’ve achieved in the past ten years and I can’t wait to see where the next ten take us.”

With the launch of the next generation of EcoBunker Advanced technology set to reduce installation costs and increase the strength of bunker walls, the next chapter for EcoBunker is already taking shape. And with the following generation of products already well into the R&D phase, the future for EcoBunker is very bright.

ABA Groundcare Celebrates 10 Years with Yamaha

ABA Groundcare Celebrates 10 Years with Yamaha: First established in 2014, ABA Groundcare based in Tiverton, Devon celebrates 10 years of selling Yamaha’s ATV range this April. Jamie Hutchings initially set up the business following dealer changes in the area and was awarded the franchise in 2014. With a strong background selling the brand for a previous dealer, it was a no-brainer for Jamie to continue with a brand he knew and was respected in the area.

“Yamaha UK were forthcoming in working with me, it felt like they saw the opportunity to keep growing the brand in the area. We have gone from being one of the youngest dealers to now one of the older ones.” When the partnership first began, ABA Groundcare sold up to 20 ATVs per year, now the company sells over 85 units into the surrounding area. ABA Groundcare took on a bigger area in recent years following the purchase of Hayes Garden Machinery at the end of 2023. The business now operates from two locations: Tiverton, Devon and Dorchester, Dorset. “Yamaha holds a strong reputation in the area, and we will support any potential customers but most of our ATVs go to the farming community. We are confident in the brand from the product point of view but also from the back-up and after sales support we receive from Yamaha UK themselves.”

Jamie and his team have consistently demonstrated a deep understanding of the needs of their customers and a true passion for the Yamaha brand. Their dedication to providing exceptional service and expertise has been instrumental in the continued growth and success of Yamaha ATVs in the southwest region. We look forward to many more years of this successful partnership.” Gareth Sloane, Manager, Power Products, Yamaha UK.

Celebrations will continue at the company’s open day on Saturday 20th April. Congratulations ABA Groundcare, here’s to another 10 years.
