Germinal’s Anti-Stress Fertiliser

Germinal’s Anti-Stress Fertiliser: No matter how naturally resistant a grass cultivar is to diseases such as fusarium, an unhealthy or nutrient deficient sward won’t be able to withstand the disease pressures associated with the onset of wetter and colder autumn conditions.

Greenkeepers are therefore advised to remember that feeding the sward goes beyond applying the main three macro-nutrients: N, P & K, and should include additional micro-nutrients, namely magnesium and iron, which can bolster tolerance to disease and cold conditions.

Germinal's Anti-Stress Fertiliser

Germinal’s specialist G13 Protekt and G14 Alleviate Fe fertilisers are formulated to provide the necessary nutrients to protect grass swards at crucial times such as during the onset of cooler autumn and winter conditions.

G13 ProteKt is a 3-0-22 (+3% Fe) anti-stress fertiliser. Containing 22% potash and 3% iron, it can be used during the autumn and winter to harden turf, heighten sward colour and prevent disease attack. Used at this time of year, G13 ProteKt enhances wear tolerance, protects the sward from frost damage and enables quicker recovery in the subsequent spring.

G13 ProteKt can also be applied in the spring and summer when its high potassium content aids transpiration control in dry periods and fortifies the drought tolerance of grass plants.

G14 Alleviate Fe is a 4-0-10 (+8% Fe) fertiliser which is ideal for protecting high value turf areas such as sports fields, golf greens and tees and bowling greens throughout the growing season, but especially during the autumn and winter months. G14 Alleviate Fe contains magnesium, a vital component of chlorophyll, which helps to maintain good metabolism of energy for healthy plant growth. Its high iron content improve resistance to disease and ensures quick greening throughout the growing season without causing any intense flushes of growth. G14 Alleviate Fe also helps to control and inhibit moss.

SCH To Sponsor IOG Award

SCH To Sponsor IOG Award: For the second consecutive year, SCH (Supplies) Ltd will be sponsoring the IOG Best Managed Artificial Surface Industry Award instead of keeping stand space.

The choice to sponsor again follows the success of last year’s Industry Awards and is especially appealing as it allows key members of staff to stay on site; ensuring products continue to reach customers without delay.

SCH To Sponsor IOG Award

The choice of award was easy to make as SCH manufacture a large range of artificial maintenance equipment for sports venues of all sizes and budgets. This year’s most popular artificial surface products have been the DCR Decompaction Rake and HSTS98 Artificial Surface Towed Sweeper

The DCR Decompaction Rake and optional DCRCA Chemical Applicator are designed to apply chemicals to long-fibre synthetic sports surfaces, most commonly 3G. The chemical is applied by a dribble/drip bar mounted in front of a row of spring-coiled scarifying tines. The tines tease and open up the surface to allow the chemical to penetrate deep into the fibres. The tines also help to remove surface compaction and aid drainage.

Two rows of levelling bars re-spread the fill to the surface, and the trailing brush grooms the play area to further remove compaction and apply attractive stripes.

The DCRCA features a 12V submersible electric pump with adjustable flow to suit the required application rate. Power to the pump is supplied from the towing unit or an independent battery may be fitted if required.

The DCR is mounted on a four wheel chassis. The two front wheels are solid casters to allow for turning in tight corners. The two rear wheels are on jack legs with adjusting facilities; this means variable penetration pressure can be put on the tines.

The 3 pairs of screw jack legs allow each working row to be lifted out of work individually to suit your grooming requirements i.e. lift out of work the spring tine rows and leave the brush in work. The DCR can be pulled by its tow bar, or a three point linkage version is available. The two rear wheels can be jacked down to raise the entire unit for transport to the storage area.

The autumn & winter months are ideal for the Artificial Surface Towed Sweeper (Ref: HSTS98), as debris on outdoor courts can quickly deteriorate playing conditions. When the unit is towed, the high-grip polymer wheels turn solid metal drive gears, transmitting rotational energy to the units 4 rows of brushes. The gear ratio creates fast spinning brushes at a relatively low towing speed. The Sweeper can be used on many different surfaces due to the brushes height adjustment feature, this also greatly extends the life of the brushes, as they can be lowered as they wear.

The HSTS98 benefits from a differential mechanism, so that both of the wheels can turn independently whilst driving the pick-up brushes, giving it superior sweeping power. This is an essential feature, as it allows manoeuvring in tight corners without the wheels ‘scuffing.’

The large capacity solid plastic catcher is rot and tear-proof, and simple to empty. A steel mesh base inside the catcher box lets sand and rubber crumb return to the artificial surface, and retains leaves, litter and debris. A steel plate can be placed over the mesh, so that everything can be collected if desired.

For the past two years, SCH have sponsored the IOG Industry Award to give back to the organisation that has helped keep them as one of the UKs leading grounds care manufacturers, and they are delighted to sponsor this prestigious award.

Deere Roam Blackheath Once More

Deere Roam Blackheath Once More: Royal Blackheath Golf Club in Eltham, south east London, has returned to the John Deere stable after signing a five-year package deal with Farol Ltd of Twyford in Berkshire for a new fleet of course maintenance equipment.

A total of 11 new machines have been acquired under the John Deere Financial operating lease deal. These include three 2500E hybrid electric greens mowers, for use on both greens and tees, two 7700A PrecisionCut fairway mowers, an 8800A Terrain Cut semi-rough mower, a 1600T wide area mower for the main rough areas, and three TH 6×4 diesel plus one TX Turf 4×2 petrol Gator utility vehicles. These join a number of older Deere machines bought in previous deals that date back to the early 2000s, including compact tractors.

Deere Roam Blackheath Once More

Instituted in 1608 by the court of King James I, Royal Blackheath is one of the oldest golf clubs in the world, with a 17th century clubhouse and records showing that members originally played on Blackheath itself, adjacent to Greenwich Park. The golf course has been extensively remodelled over the past six years, with all the bunkers being redesigned and renovated, many tee complexes reconstructed, and also many ditches and ditch banks reshaped.

“We’re looking forward to a major course relaunch in 2020, so it’s going to be a big year for us,” says golf course manager Allen Blizzard, who leads a team of five greenkeepers plus two Hadlow College apprentices. “A lot of the bunkers had become a bit of a mismatch over the years, and we wanted to go back to James Braid’s original design, with fewer trees, more open aspects around the course and more, longer rough grass.

“Alongside this, the club secretary Mark Hickson and I had a good look around at the latest golf course maintenance equipment, to see what the market had to offer. We’ve always had a good relationship over the past couple of decades with John Deere’s turf dealers, and Dave Searles of Farol came up with the right package that was also very competitive financially.

“We’ve found over the years that an operating lease works very well for us, plus their dealer and manufacturer back-up, after-sales service and support have always been excellent. I’ve always felt that John Deere machines suit our needs well, especially for precision mowing – they’re great for following the contours of the course to provide a first class finish.

“I also think that Deere’s rotary mowers are the best I’ve ever used,” says Allen. “They’re comfortable to operate, reliable and time efficient. With other machines we’ve had to use a tractor and blower to tidy up the mess left by clippings, which made it a two-man job. With 125 acres to cover, and all the extra reconstruction work we’ve had to do, we need to make the most of our available manpower.

“This has also been our first experience with John Deere’s latest A Model TechControl and QA cutting unit technology, which helps us be even more productive. From my point of view the new machinery fleet, especially the semi-rough mower, really suits our needs and the golf course is looking in really good shape.”
