John Deere mowers excel at The K Club

John Deere mowers excel at The K Club: One of Ireland’s top golf resorts has taken delivery of two new John Deere 9009A TerrainCut rotary rough mowers to keep its courses in pristine condition. The famous K Club 5-star golfing resort in Kildare, just half an hour’s drive from Dublin, hosted the Ryder Cup in 2006 as well as the Irish Open in 2016 and 13 European Opens.

When the need arose for new rough mowers at the resort, thorough research was carried out by the greens staff to investigate what each brand had to offer. In the end the top cutting quality and reliability of the John Deere models trumped the competition, and two 9009A mowers were ordered from local golf & turf dealer Dublin Grass Machinery.

Powered by a 55hp engine, the John Deere 9009A is a five-gang 68.6cm (27in) independent rotary deck mower with a cutting width of 2.7m (9ft), providing the all-day productivity needed for golf course rough mowing.

Gerry Byrne has been Resort Superintendent at The K Club for the past 24 years and is well pleased with the machines’ performance. “We recently bought the two new John Deere rotary mowers as we wanted to improve the overall presentation of the rough areas on both the Palmer North and Palmer South courses,” he says. “We carried out extensive research into all the main brands and decided that the 9009A suited our needs best of all.

“I have used John Deere mowers in the past but not that recently, just the company’s tractors. It’s been good to reconnect with Dublin Grass Machinery, as I have known Stan Mitchell and the dealership team since I was a trainee many years ago.

“We have operated other makes of rough mower here, and they carried out a good job of overall course maintenance. However, we felt the more versatile John Deere 9009A mowers would give us a better quality of cut. Both mowers not only provide a premium, precision cut but importantly they are also able to cope with our intricate dune style mounds, particularly around sensitive areas of the courses. I find them to be very proficient and user friendly,” he adds.

Most of the servicing and maintenance of the machinery at The K Club is carried out by the resort’s staff mechanic. A good parts and backup service from Dublin Grass Machinery was another influential factor in the purchasing decision for Gerry Byrne and the greenkeeping team.

“Our mechanic Pat Freany has been with us for over 25 years,” he says. “Pat carries out all the servicing and repairs and has a very good working relationship with the dealership. The quick turnaround on parts delivery and service kits is a unique selling point for John Deere, which Pat really appreciates.”

As for future investments in new machinery at The K Club, Gerry Byrne is confident that John Deere will feature again. “The K Club has significant investment plans for the whole estate, and John Deere mowing equipment will certainly be part of our continuing strategy to enhance the overall presentation standards for our members and guests.”

John Deere supports the ECGC Masters

John Deere supports the ECGC Masters: The month of April is synonymous in golf for the Masters, and each year Education City Golf Cub runs its own version of the tournament over the 18-hole Championship course, which recently hosted the European Tour’s Commercial Bank Qatar Masters.

The ECGC Masters was held on April 9 & 10, and this year John Deere supported the club event in conjunction with the effort that went into setting up the golf course to present Augusta-like conditions.

The tournament aims to ensure that all details are aligned to the Masters in terms of course conditions, fast greens and immaculate presentation, all prepared by a fleet of 93 John Deere machines including tractors and greens, fairway & rough mowers, giving members and guests an exceptional experience over the two-day event. Players competed in the gross division for the ECGC Masters green jacket, while others could compete in the net division for some great prizes.

“The ECGC Masters is a signature event at Education City Golf Club,” said the club’s Director of Golf Rhys Beecher. “It is an opportunity to showcase the fantastic playing surfaces and course conditions during a two-day tournament. The team here enjoy making the small touches that bring the ECGC Masters to life for both our members and the guests that participate. John Deere is a terrific partner, as its precision equipment helps elevate the ECGC Masters to one of the most significant weekends in the golfing calendar.”

In 2018, in line with the club’s sustainability vision, John Deere was selected as the perfect match to support the club’s vision in becoming a pioneer for sustainable practices and superior playing surfaces. Hybrid electric technology was chosen and is now used on over 90 per cent of the mowing fleet.

Education City Golf Club’s General Manager Michael Braidwood said: “Our core product is the golf course and therefore it must be presented in immaculate condition. We aim to highlight this annually at a number of key tournaments and the ECGC Masters is one of these prestigious events.”

Carlos Aragones, John Deere European golf & turf sales & marketing manager, added: “Together with our local dealer Progressive Trading, we were delighted to be involved with Education City Golf Club in helping to prepare the Championship Course for this signature event at such a wonderful venue. Our partnership approach helps everyone to achieve the best possible results where they matter, out on the course, and keep things running as smoothly as possible throughout the tournament.”

Engcon’s mission is to change the world of digging. With Engcon the excavator is turned into a tool carrier changing the way operators dig and enabling new ways to use an excavator. Engcon’s tiltrotator together with an Engcon quick hitch gives operators the ability to change tools without leaving the cabin and use them in new ways that increase the flexibility and efficiency of their excavators. All this ultimately leads to increased productivity and profitability for customers. Engcon is now a preferred supplier of John Deere, which means end users can access Engcon’s smart products from the John Deere and Hitachi excavator dealer network throughout the United States and Canada.

“This journey started in the Nordic countries 30 years ago based on the idea that it was possible to dig and utilise excavators in a better way. At Engcon we are thrilled to increase the pace of this journey together with John Deere, we believe that we will both benefit by making Engcon’s proven solutions available in the US and Canada together with John Deere and Hitachi excavators. However, the real winners in this are the operators and end customers that will be able to work in new ways and be more productive and profitable”, says Krister Blomgren, CEO Engcon.

Thanks to the new collaboration, customers will be able to choose Engcon’s tiltrotators and automatic quick mounting system with EC-Oil, where the driver can connect hydraulic tools without leaving the cab, through authorised John Deere and Hitachi dealers in the USA and Canada.

“At John Deere, we have always been focused on providing products and technology that enable our customers to optimise efficiency and uptime on the job site. Through this agreement with Engcon, customers are further equipped to benefit from enhanced jobsite performance and ultimately profitability”, says David Thorne, senior vice president, sales & marketing, John Deere Construction & Forestry.

This agreement makes it possible for customers to benefit from easier and quicker access to Engcon’s products through their local John Deere and Hitachi excavator dealers. This marks a milestone in making the tiltrotator concept more accepted and known globally, particularly in the US and Canada where Engcon is expecting an increased rate of growth in the coming years.

Facts:

  • Through authorised John Deere and Hitachi excavator dealers in the US and Canada customers will be able to select Engcon’s tiltrotators for the John Deere excavator range from 26G to 345G and the Hitachi excavator range from ZX26 through ZX345.
  • Engcon’s EC-Oil automatic quick hitches will also be available through authorised John Deere and Hitachi excavator dealers for the John Deere 75G to the 380G excavators and Hitachi ZX75 to the ZX380 excavators where the operator can connect hydraulic tools without leaving the cab, Engcon’s standard locking control QSC and the proportional DC2 control system.

New John Deere ride-on mowers

New John Deere ride-on mowers: Among a host of new additions to the company’s lawn tractor and zero-turn mower ranges for 2021, John Deere has expanded its commercial ZTrak ZTR range to include two new petrol models and two rear-discharge decks to meet customer demand.

Offering a high-output yet compact solution for groundscare professionals, particularly when working in restricted spaces, John Deere zero-turn mowers are based on a robust, heavy-duty frame including a ROPS. The high-gauge PRO steel rotary cutting decks feature a deep mowing chamber designed to handle more grass for increased capacity. This increases airflow so that a quality cut can be achieved even when mowing at maximum speed.

The new Z740R semi-commercial mower is powered by a Kawasaki 23.5hp commercial grade petrol engine, while the Z950R commercial machine has a larger Kawasaki 27hp petrol engine and is equipped with Michelin Tweel X Turf airless radial tyres as standard (these are optional on the smaller model). Both mowers feature an adjustable operator platform and ComfortGlide suspension seat with armrests, with easy access to a quick-change height-of-cut dial and on-the-go tracking adjustments to maximise mowing performance.

The Z740R offers a choice of high-capacity 122 or 137cm (48 or 54in) side-discharge decks, while the larger Z950R is available with 137 or 152cm (54 or 60in) side-discharge and new 152cm (60in) rear-discharge decks. John Deere’s existing Stage V diesel engine zero-turn mowers, the Z994R 24.7hp and Z997R 37.4hp models, can now be fitted with a choice of 152cm (60in) side-discharge and new 152 or 183cm (60 or 72in) rear-discharge decks in addition to the previously available side-discharge options, depending on model.

The new heavy-duty rear-discharge decks employ a single-belt deck design for easy maintenance, and are mulching enabled for a cleaner finish. These have been introduced to the John Deere zero-turn mower range for the first time, specifically for those customers who require this particular configuration to meet contract requirements.

All these new zero-turn mowers also provide easy access for servicing and on-board diagnostics, while available attachments include a tool carrier, striping brush and storage tray.

Available in Europe since 2019, when they were introduced on John Deere’s ZTrak 900 Series commercial ZTR mowers, the Michelin X Tweel Turf airless radial tyre virtually eliminates tyre downtime from punctures when compared to traditional pneumatic tyres, and is almost maintenance free.

It has the same dimensions and bolt pattern as a standard tyre, but features automotive rubber technology that allows the tread to last up to three times longer. The Tweel also reduces ground compaction and increases ride quality, which is enhanced by the mowers’ ComfortGlide seat.

John Deere supports #GroundsWeek

John Deere supports #GroundsWeek: John Deere is officially supporting the Grounds Management Association’s #GroundsWeek 2021 event, an inaugural celebration week for the turf care sector.

Managed by the Grounds Management Association (GMA), the leading not-for-profit membership body for grounds professionals and volunteers, this new turf care campaign will take place from March 1-7. It is designed to celebrate and highlight the vital role that professional grounds staff, volunteers and the turf sector generally play in making sport possible.

Following a difficult year for the sector due to the impact of Covid-19, #GroundsWeek aims to showcase grounds staff and the amazing work that they do – and have continued to do – despite sport coming to a grinding halt. It also comes after a year where parks and green spaces have been hugely valuable to the public’s health, with increased use for ‘daily exercise’ and physical activity.

To coincide with the week’s celebrations, John Deere Limited will be hosting its first ever Turf Technology online event at 2:30pm on Wednesday 3 March, live from its Langar, Nottingham headquarters. This will highlight the latest technology advances being used on John Deere turf equipment, including GPS guidance, AutoTrac automatic steering, sprayer Section Control and integrated tools to manage traceability data – watch a short video clip here. To participate in this free event, register here.

John Deere turf division manager and GMA member Chris Meacock said: “The Turf Technology event will feature Robert Patterson, course manager at Royal Aberdeen Golf Club, and Mike Ramsay of MC Country Services Ltd as they share their experience of how our GPS technology in particular has helped their respective golf and groundscare businesses. The event will be around 50 minutes in length, streamed live over a webinar tool with the ability to ask questions directly to the speakers during the event.”

Geoff Webb, CEO of the GMA, said: “After a tough year, #GroundsWeek is a fantastic opportunity for every part of the sector to come together and celebrate all the hard work that’s gone on throughout the year. We want to inspire sports fans and the general public to realise the vital role we play and get even more people to enter the profession and lend a helping hand at pitches across the country.

“We’re grateful to those officially supporting #GroundsWeek, with businesses and partners helping us champion grounds staff and the amazing work they do.”

More information on #GroundsWeek can be found here. John Deere will also be promoting the GMA event on its UK and Irish social media channels, specifically at https://www.facebook.com/JohnDeereUKIE and https://www.facebook.com/groups/keepitgreenjohndeere
