Mowing Made Easy

Mowing Made Easy: Maintaining the expansive grounds of Repton School requires precision, efficiency, and innovation.

For Andrew Butler, Head of Grounds and Gardens, and his team, the introduction of the Etesia Hydro 80 ride-on mower has not only streamlined operations but also revolutionised the way they manage the school’s green spaces.

Mowing Made Easy

Repton School, nestled in the serene surroundings of Derbyshire, boasts extensive grounds that demand meticulous care. From ornamental gardens to sprawling lawns surrounding boarding houses, every corner of the campus requires attention. However, with limited time and resources, the grounds and gardens team found themselves struggling to keep up with the demands of manual mowing using pedestrian mowers.

Andrew explains, “There is a lot of mowing carried out around the boarding house where the team were previously using pedestrian mowers. I felt it was just taking too long, and then other jobs were getting neglected because of it. It just felt like the gardening team were out mowing all the time, and less time was being spent on the actual gardening.”

Introducing the Etesia Hydro 80, a compact yet powerful ride-on mower designed to tackle both long and short grass with ease. Featuring a hydrostatic drive and a robust 15hp twin-cylinder Kawasaki engine, the Hydro 80 offers unparalleled efficiency and output. Its specially contoured deck ensures clippings are collected without clogging, even in wet conditions, while anti-scalp rollers maintain a pristine finish on uneven terrain.

Andrew recounts the transformation brought about by the Hydro 80, stating, “Now instead of spending all week mowing, it literally takes just a couple of days. This means that we can concentrate on the gardens instead such as getting more colour into various areas. The time management is significantly better.”

One of the Hydro 80’s most impressive features is its ability to navigate tight spaces with ease. Andrew notes, “The reason we were using pedestrian mowers is because there was always the problem of getting a ride-on mower in and out of gates, so we thought about taking various gates out to make the job easier, but then we came across the Etesia Hydro 80. It allows us to get into areas where previously we had to use pedestrian mowers. These areas, which previously would have taken an hour or two, are now taking just 15-20 minutes.

“Its ability to cut and collect in the rain is amazing,” continues Andrew. “Even in the heavy rain the Hydro 80 is going out and cutting, so again it improves our efficiency.”

Beyond its efficiency, the Hydro 80’s durability and manoeuvrability have earned high praise from Andrew and his team. “I like the durability of it, how quick it is, how easy it is to manoeuvre it, and how it can get through longer grass with no problem at all,” Andrew remarks.

As Repton School continues to uphold its reputation for excellence, the Etesia Hydro 80 stands as a testament to the power of innovation in grounds management, ensuring that the campus remains a source of pride and inspiration for all who visit.

Extending the benefits of lithium to the entire course enables golf organizations to reduce their carbon emissions further, but there are also significant user benefits. With noise and vibration greatly decreased, a day of cutting fairways or rough will have less stress on the operator, bringing increased comfort and productivity.

To enhance the efficiency and productivity of these machines, Jacobsen has added PACE Technology™, an equipment management and geofencing system that is a screenless web-based solution. PACE can be accessed from any device and features real-time tracking and task management to maximize the effectiveness of your operation. Users can track and measure the power output per hole of the machines to maximize their performance and develop a bespoke picture of how they work on the course.

Testing these innovations and their capabilities has been a big consideration. Jacobsen, Cushman®, and PACE have collaborated with 26 courses across three continents in 2023, including Sage Valley Golf Club, South Carolina, Loch Lomond Golf Club, Scotland, and Peninsula Kingswood in Australia.

Cramer revolutionises large-scale mowing

Cramer revolutionises large-scale mowing: The Cramer Zero Turn 82ZT132 is an innovative battery-driven mower that is equivalent to an 800cc petrol-driven Zero Turn, with lower running and ownership costs.

Next to traditional lawn tractors, Zero Turns have become more and more popular due to their ability to turn on the spot, allowing users to mow quite narrowly around obstacles and in corners. Zero Turns are especially useful for mowing large areas but also come in handy for broad mowing in narrow spaces or parks and areas with many trees, bushes and flower beds.

Most Zero Turns and lawn tractors in the market are petrol driven, but the Cramer Zero Turn 82ZT132 features an integrated 82V 16kWh battery, which enables landscapers to mow a 40000 m² area / five hours on a single charge. Without having to use petrol you also work with lower vibrations, lower noise and zero emissions or harmful fumes.

The Cramer Zero Turn 82ZT132 has a forward speed of 16 km/h and perfect turning around obstacles thanks to driver sticks which allow easy steering and handling. The fabricated 132cm cutting deck, with three efficient brushless 1.5 kW motors, is wider than most common cutting decks and will cut grass reliably, fast and evenly – and without having to compromise on the quality of mowing.

The Zero Turn also provides extra safety: with the integrated 4G SIM card you will always stay connected to your device. The Cramer Connect App allows you to set schedules, get notifications and reports from driving, and have total security over your device’s location at any time. Extra protection against theft is provided by the GSM Geofence, which makes sure the Zero Turn is not used outside its home territory.

Zero Turns are known for a quite compact product design, allowing the user to sit on top of the machine in an ergonomic sitting position and easily ascend and descend. The Cramer Zero Turn 82ZT132 has the added benefit of a suspended seat for extra driving comfort.

AS 1000 Ovis RC – Simply Steep Mowing

AS 1000 Ovis RC – Simply Steep Mowing: At the beginning of March, AS-Motor started series production of the new remote-controlled tracked flail mower AS 1000 Ovis RC. True to the motto ‘Simply steep mowing’, the mower convinces with its slope-compatibility, high mowing performance and easy handling and maintenance.

By professionals, for professionals

Noise protection and railway embankments, rainwater retention basins, solar parks and wind power plants often pose great challenges for landscape managers and service providers. The AS 1000 Ovis RC is up to the task of regular maintenance of these difficult-to-access, impassable and steep surfaces.

AS 1000 Ovis RC – Simply Steep Mowing

AS 1000 Ovis RC – Simply Steep Mowing

The power of the Vanguard Professional 2-cylinder engine with 23hp maximum output is transmitted directly and with low loss of efficiency to the blade shaft via a belt drive. The 4-stroke OHV engine with cyclone filter is equipped with a particularly strong crankshaft and has a displacement of 627cm3 at a speed of 3,600rpm. The AS 1000 Ovis RC enables a mowing speed of up to 5km/h and thus an area output of up to 5,000m2/h, with an excellent cutting pattern and even grass placement across the entire working width.

The 100cm wide flail mower, in combination with the somewhat narrower tracked undercarriage, makes it easy to mow close to the edge and comfortably to within a few centimetres of crash barriers and other obstacles.

Flexibility and suitability for slopes

Thanks to the flexibly adjustable mowing deck, the new flail mower with tracked undercarriage can be optimally adapted to all terrain conditions. Guided by a wide caster roller, the mower deck adapts perfectly to any contour. The adjustable sliding frame means that the specified minimum cutting height can be maintained throughout. Maximum traction on difficult terrain is ensured by the carried insert without ground contact. The mower’s surfing suspension, with its large pendulum travel, also adapts well to uneven ground in difficult, hilly terrain.

The AS 1000 Ovis RC with its compact design (183cm long, 114cm wide and 69cm high) mows difficult terrain and hard-to-reach areas without any problems thanks to remote control from a safe distance. The automatic, mechanical parking brake provides additional safety when working on slopes. The large track units with steel inserts ensure low ground pressure, ideal power transmission and best grip on steep slopes. The deep-seated, horizontally-mounted Vanguard Professional engine with optimised oil lubrication and the mower’s low overall height give the AS 1000 Ovis RC a low centre of gravity and makes it extremely suitable for use on slopes, allowing for mowing under deep obstacles, for example in solar parks.

The AS 1000 Ovis RC’s low weight of only 419kg not only protects the ground, but the balanced weight distribution and the robust crawler chassis also enable safe mowing of steep slopes up to 55 degrees.

Reliability and ease

In their work to develop a completely new product, AS-Motor’s development engineers have used and reimagined tried and tested components. The new AS 1000 Ovis RC uses reliable components from the YAK series, such as the robust flail mower and the belt pressure spring tensioning system. Robust hydraulic motors from large-scale production, with their enormous torque, also ensure a precise, powerful travel drive. Clear operating elements and precise controls ensure comfortable, intuitive handling and also precise manoeuvring.

Once the first service has taken place, after 100 hours of operation, long maintenance intervals of 400 hours follow. For daily cleaning, the AS 1000 Ovis RC offers excellent accessibility. Air ducts, filters and oil control are accessible without tools and the mower can be easily placed in the service position to provide optimum access to the flail mower. The defined adjustment dimension also guarantees precise track tensioning.

In the transport position, the new flail mower with tracked undercarriage is even more compact (only 159cm long), so transport to the place of use is no problem.

Ovis – the namesake

Ovis are large, strong wild sheep that live on rough mountain slopes at altitudes of up to 5,000m. They feel at home on steep terrain, are sure footed, and adapt perfectly to their environment. The new AS 1000 Ovis RC remote-controlled flail mower lives up to its name.

With a 62L collection box, the LM001G has a 480mm cutting width and offers a no-load speed of up to 3,200rpm. The machine can also be operated in a quieter ‘Noise Reduction’ mode with a no-load speed of 2,500rpm, which is ideal for working in residential and public spaces. The LM002G, with 70L grass box, affords users with a 534mm cutting width with a no-load speed of 2,800rpm, or 2,300rpm in the ‘Noise Reduction’ mode.

Each feature 10 height positions from 20mm at the lowest setting and 100mm at the highest, and both can be operated with a choice of three cutting modes: Normal, Soft No-Load, or Noise Reduction. Other key features include the electric brake, soft start, anti-restart function and constant speed control to ensure ultimate safety whilst delivering excellent results.

The new, durable products are designed for rough terrain with large wheels and high-end steel decks that minimise damage from obstacles and flying debris, as well as IXP4 weather resistant construction. The mowers include a mulching function and a grass level indicator, so operators know when the bag needs emptying. Furthermore, the machines can be easily stored at the end of the day in a compact, vertical position, thanks to the foldable handle design.

“To meet the increasing demand for high intensity, reliable and robust landscaping power tools, we have added our first lawnmowers to our popular XGT collection,” said Kevin Brannigan, Marketing Manager at Makita. “Makita’s revolutionary XGT system has been designed to ensure that the battery and the tools’ motor technology work together for optimum performance and now includes over 25 outdoor products among the range so that users can switch between tasks and tools easily, simply by swapping the battery. These are available as complete models, or as body only versions if you already have XGT batteries and want to expand your range of tools.”
