The combination of Eon Bio, which gives rapid establishment and mass rooting, in particular during renovations, combined with Floratine foliar nutrition and excellent Groundsmanship has been the recipe for success at the Molineux and Training Grounds.

Wayne Lumbard commented that the most difficult part of his job in the last season had been the installation and the renovation of the pitch and by September the pitch “just got better and better.”

Emma Kilby’s Marathon Success

Emma Kilby’s Marathon Success: Emma Kilby, Technical Area Sales Manager for ICL, has not only beaten three types of cancer but she has also just completed the London Marathon and in the process has raised over £3,000 for Children with Cancer UK.

Emma’s battle with cancer started when she was just 16. She was again diagnosed with cancer on two other occasions but after a long and difficult battle, enduring months of operations, chemotherapy and radioactive iodine, she pulled through. Her struggle with this terrible disease didn’t allow it to get in the way of life however – she finished her studies at university, got married and gave birth to two beautiful daughters.

Emma Kilby's Marathon Success

Emma wanted to give something back and made the decision to run the London Marathon in a bid to raise funds for Children with Cancer UK.

Almost 4,000 children and young people are diagnosed with cancer every year in the UK. That’s ten every day. Children with Cancer UK is the leading national children’s charity dedicated to the fight against childhood cancer. They fund life-saving research into the causes, prevention and treatment of childhood cancer and they work to protect young lives through essential welfare programmes.

This year’s London Marathon was officially the hottest on record and Emma ran the 26.2-mile race in gruelling temperatures of 24.1C and recorded a time of 5 ½ hours.

“I’ve been training for 16 weeks and we trained in extremely cold weather conditions,” said Emma. “Nothing prepares you for the heat we were running in on Sunday but I never felt that I was going to quit. It just wasn’t an option. The spirit of the day was indescribable, as is the pain that accompanies it. The crowd and the adrenaline really help you to cross the finish line.

“For me, it was a personal challenge and a mental challenge too because it has been on my bucket list ever since I was ill. There were times when I wasn’t even able to walk from all the treatment I was receiving so for me to be able to run a marathon was a huge, emotional achievement.

“It has taken its toll though! I’ve been extremely tired and I haven’t been able to eat properly since the race. It takes a mile per day for your body to recuperate so it will take about a month to totally recover.”

Emma is now back to work after raising an incredible £3,300 for Children with Cancer UK and says that she is overwhelmed with the amount of support she received.

“I got to the finish line and I had over 120 messages on my phone from people within the industry and from friends and family.

“I just want to say a really massive thank you to everybody for all of their support and generosity because it would not have been possible without them. It is unbelievable to see the amount of money that I have raised so far for such a great charity. It was a privilege to run for CWCUK which is close to my heart and it is good to know that this money will help the charity to determine the causes, find new cures and provide care for children with cancer.”

There is still time to make a donation to Emma’s worthy cause. Please visit – https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/emma-kilby

Secret Of Madrid And PSG’s Success

Secret Of Madrid And PSG’s Success: Last night the footballing world stopped to watch the second leg of the Champions League last 16 tie, pitting Real Madrid against Paris Saint Germain.

Real Madrid need no introduction having won the Champions League a record 13 times, including winning it the previous two seasons, as well as having a team full of world class stars headed by Cristiano Ronaldo, arguably the best player in the world.

Secret Of Madrid And PSG’s Success

PSG meanwhile strive to reach the levels of Madrid and plan to do so with large transfer fee’s. Backed by Qatari investment they have blown away the record transfer fee by prizing Neymar away from Barcelona in the summer for £200 million pounds.

Joining him was Kylian Mbappe for £165 million with the permanent deal to go through in the summer. Therefore, the thought of two global giants of the game going head to head enticed most fans of the beautiful game to watch the game at the Parc De Princes.

However, beneath the big transfer fee’s and glamour players a huge part of both side’s recent successes is down to two men who made unlikely moves to both clubs.

Jonathan Calderwood has been PSG’s groundsman since 2013, joining from Premier League club Aston Villa, while Paul Burgess has been in charge of the Bernabeu’s pitch since 2009; having previously been at Arsenal.

Both men have won the Groundsman of the year award while in England but have different stories on their way to the two European giants.

Calderwood left his home country of Northern Ireland at the young age of 17 to study Turf Science & Sports Ground Management’ at Myerscough College for 3-years. After that he became the deputy head groundsman at the old Wembley. Eventually, he became the head groundsman at the home of English football overseeing it’s final four years; before he was forced to move on as the FA announced plans for the new Wembley which was opened seven years later.

This led to Calderwood moving to the Midlands, spending a year at Wolverhampton Wanderers before joining Aston Villa in 2002. As Grounds Manager at the club, he was responsible for not only the Villa Park pitch, but also the club’s training ground Bodymoor Heath.

During his 11-year spell at Villa Park, Calderwood was named Groundsman of the Year twice as well as gaining a number of other awards for his work on the turf. One man who was impressed with his work was Gerard Houillier, who managed Villa during the 2010-11 season before leaving due to health issues.

Despite the Frenchman only being there a year Calderwood had clearly made his mark on him, because when PSG started to look for a new groundsman Houiller recommended the Villa man.

When then PSG manager Carlo Ancelotti backed this up the French club set out to get their man, in their aim to have the best pitch as well as the best players. Calderwood is in charge of the Parc De Princess pitch, as well as the club’s training and academy pitches.
He is also tasked with flying out to America at the end of every season as well to make sure that the pitch the club play’s on in the following pre-season is up to scratch.
Calderwood has certainly made an impact in Paris, but it was Burgess who was the first Premier League groundsman to earn a move aboard.

The year was 2009 and Real Madrid was in a bleak period of it’s history. They had won the La Liga title. They had just lost the La Liga title to Pep Guardiola’s all conquering Barcelona and had not won the Champions League since 2002.

However, the start of the 2009-10 brought optimism around the club. Florentino Perez had taken over as president again, splashing big on Ronaldo and Kaka in a quest to regain the title.

While this did fail, there was a small bit of success at Madrid that season due to Burgess. The Bernabeu pitch had been criticised season’s prior and was blamed for injuries to players.

When Inter Milan and Bayern Munich stepped out of the pitch for that seasons Champions League final however, it was spectacular with criticism a thing of the distant past.

This was the main reason why the Spanish giants had recruited Burgess. The Englishmen began his groundsman career by doing work experience at his local club Blackpool, before joining Arsenal in 1996 at the age of 18.

He then became head groundsman at the Gunners previous ground Highbury four years later. While at Arsenal he won the Groundsman of the Year award three times, leading to Madrid swooping in for him.

Like Calderwood at PSG, Burgess is highly rated at Madrid and is also required to scout out the pitches where the club is due to play it’s pre-season games. In 2014, with the club set to travel to Morocco to take part in the 2014 FIFA Club World Cup, they sent Burgess to inspect the pitch.

Burgess was not impressed with the pitch at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium where Madrid played four matches. Due to this the club chose to arrive two days before their first game, so they could fit in an extra training session at their own Valdebebas training ground.

Burgess’s advice worked as Madrid went on to win the tournament. Madrid will be aiming to compete in the tournament again this December but must win the Champions League for a third time in a row to qualify.

Last night’s 2-1 win over PSG saw them progress to the quarter finals. However, it has been a season of disappointment with the club thirteen points behind Barcelona in La Liga. As for PSG, they look set for fifth Ligue 1 title in six seasons (they are fourteen points clear at the top), but the Champions League is the prize they want most and will be disappointed with not progressing very far in the competition.

Regardless of the team’s form though, their pitches will always be winners thanks to the work of Calderwood and Burgess.

Success For Deeside Golf Club

Success For Deeside Golf Club: The greenkeeping team at Deeside Golf Club in Aberdeenshire is celebrating after winning a BIGGA award at BTME 2018.

Led by Course Manager Neil McLoughlin (41), the greenkeeping team were announced as the winner of the BIGGA Greenkeeping Achievement of the Year Award sponsored by Baroness, at a ceremony held this evening in the Harrogate Convention Centre’s Royal Hall.

Success For Deeside Golf Club

When Storm Frank hit Aberdeenshire the day before New Year’s Eve in 2015, it caused the River Dee to reach record levels, three times covering the course in a thick layer of silt and debris.

In the aftermath, the team was able to get 10 holes reopened after just 77 days and the clean-up saw over six tonnes of grass seed laid down, 10,000m2 of turf laid and all 98 bunkers rebuilt, using 3,000 tonnes of sand for topdressing and bunkers.

During 2017 the hard work continued, with the silt layer impeding drainage. Over 400m of drainage was installed and a programme of scarification and topdressing helped break down the silt layer further.

The Deeside team was presented with the award by television presenter and #ThisGirlGolfs ambassador Naga Munchetty at the BIGGA Welcome Celebration sponsored by Textron Golf. The awards ceremony is one of the highlights of BTME 2018, the premier turf management exhibition in Europe.

Neil said: “It’s a real honour to win this award. Storm Frank came in and devastated the whole Dee Valley and the golf course ended up in a hell of a state.

“We do flood quite a lot, but generally we call them clean floods

BIGGA Chief Executive Jim Croxton said: “Of the golf clubs who were hit hard by the devastation that Storm Frank wrought in December 2015, it was perhaps Deeside who were hit hardest of all.

“For greenkeepers who dedicate their lives to maintaining a relatively small patch of land, the damage must have been heartbreaking. It is therefore to Neil and his team’s immense credit that they were able to pick themselves up and restore the course to its former glory.

“I cannot praise the greenkeeping team highly enough for the work they have done to get Deeside back on its feet. They are truly an inspiration to greenkeepers all over the country and they are worthy recipients of this year’s BIGGA Greenkeeping Achievement of the Year Award sponsored by Baroness.”

The other finalists for the BIGGA Greenkeeping Achievement of the Year Award sponsored by Baroness were Andrew Brougham, head greenkeeper of Astbury Golf Club, and Stuart Imeson, course manager at Dunstanburgh Castle Golf Club.

BTME 2018 runs until Thursday 25 January and features more than 150 exhibitors from all aspects of the turf management industry. Each year more than 4,500 greenkeepers, trade members, club managers and other representatives of the golfing industry come together to network and share news of the latest education and innovation.
