Montrose Rewrites History With Landmark Name Change

Montrose Rewrites History With Landmark Name Change: Montrose Golf Links has announced unprecedented plans to rename one of the oldest golf courses in the world. The bid to relaunch the renowned Medal Course at Montrose as the 1562 Course is part of an enterprising plan to recognise the significant role played by the ancient east coast course in the world of golf.

Montrose Rewrites History With Landmark Name Change

The rebranding exercise will be the first time the course has gone through such a process and will be completed during the 2018 season when the world’s oldest major; the Open Championship, returns to the Angus region. The historic change will also be accompanied by a number of exciting initiatives designed to celebrate 450 years of golf at the two-times Open Championship Final Qualifying venue.

Jason Boyd, PGA Professional and Operations Manager at Montrose Golf Links, described the launch of the 1562 Course as an exciting and positive move. “We don’t make enough of the fact that golf was first recorded in Montrose in 1562,” said Boyd who spearheaded the idea. “The name change will give even more credibility to our golf offering and by doing so will open up new doors. Bringing 1562 to the fore will make a huge difference. It’s the most important aspect we have and it is our biggest marketing strength – we need to make as much of it as we can.”

The renaissance of the Montrose course, which hosted the PGA EuroPro Tour’s Eagle Orchid Scottish Masters in June, will be unveiled through a series of events and announcements leading up to the formal relaunch at the start of the golfing season. The idea to rename the fifth oldest golf course in the world certainly breaks with convention and is believed to be unprecedented in modern times.

“This is a fairly bold move, especially in the world of golf,” noted Boyd. “Courses that have been around for 450 years don’t often receive makeovers like this, but we feel assigning the date to the course name clearly illustrates the extraordinary golfing heritage that exists here as well as the significance of Montrose in terms of the development of the game.”

The stunning east coast course, which features seven spectacular cliff-face holes and regularly appears in the most prestigious golf rankings, has been shaped by some of the foremost names in golf including Willie Park Jr, Old Tom Morris and Harry Colt. Indeed, with over four centuries of golf under its belt, the current layout has a classic feel and is widely regarded as one of the most natural links layouts in Scotland.

“It’s very natural. It has stuck to the same layout for more than 100 years,” said Boyd. “Changing the name gives us an opportunity to raise awareness of the course and reach out to a wider audience. As soon as you mention 1562, you open doors that haven’t have been open to us until now. Golfers realise the significance of dates in golf and they know how important they are. The fact we are celebrating the fabulous golfing heritage that is synonymous with Montrose will only serve to attract more people to visit this unique place and play one of the oldest courses in the world for themselves.”

Montrose Golf Links features two traditional links courses; The Medal and The Broomfield and is located a 30-minute drive from Carnoustie – host of the 147th Open Championship – and 1 ½-hrs drive from St Andrews.

First E-Z-GO ELiTE Golf Cars Purchased in Europe

Golfsociëteit De Lage Vuursche First in Europe to Purchase E-Z-GO ELiTE Golf Cars: Golfsociëteit De Lage Vuursche, located in the Dutch province of Utrecht is the first golf club to purchase a fleet of E-Z-GO ELiTE Series golf cars in Europe. The delivery was made by local dealer Van der Pols.

Golfsociëteit De Lage Vuursche First in Europe to Purchase E-Z-GO ELiTE Golf Cars

The Dutch golfing society was also the first club in Europe to purchase a fleet of 10 E-Z-GO RXV golf cars in 2008. The new fleet comprises of 15 E-Z-GO RXV ELiTE golf cars, all of which feature integrated Textron Fleet Management GPS (TFM GPS).

Arnoud de Jager is the managing director at the club after being involved in the construction of the golf course as head greenkeeper in 2000. Arnoud has held his current position for 10 years now. Commenting on the recent investment, he said:

“It feels great to be the first in Europe to adopt this new technology, and be able to offer our members a unique, immersive golfing experience. We have around 700 members, and our top priority is providing them with the best quality whether that is playing surfaces, clubhouse facilities or golf cars.

“Our maintenance team also loves the new vehicles; there is zero maintenance required on the batteries of the new golf cars, and they are light, which means there is less stress on the turf. The charging time has also been dramatically reduced, which saves us time and energy costs. It really was a no-brainer investment.

“Our relationship with Van der Pols and E-Z-GO is fantastic. We are very proud to be the first customers not once, but twice. A big part of our purchasing decision was due to the superb after-sales support from our dealer, and the knowledge that all of the staff have at the company. We couldn’t have asked for a better experience, and we are very pleased with the results so far.”

Andre Andrade, International Director of Golf Sales at Textron Golf said:

“We are very appreciative of the support and confidence that Golfsociëteit De Lage Vuursche has placed in our E-Z-GO product range from day one. We believe the quality and innovation of our products are key in meeting the needs of our customers. We always listen to what they want when we design our products, and this is evident in the new ELiTE Series that we have recently launched. We have already received a huge volume of enquires and orders for the new golf cars, which is testament to the product development team at Textron Golf.”

Golfsociëteit De Lage Vuursche is a members-only club which opened in 2000. The 18-hole course was designed by Kyle Phillips and is regarded as one of the best in the country. Facilities include a wellness centre, meeting rooms and a restaurant.

New Addition To ICL’s Greenmaster Pro-Lite Range

New Addition To ICL’s Greenmaster Pro-Lite Range: ICL has announced the launch of an upgrade to its autumn/winter fine turf fertilizer range.

New Addition To ICL’s Greenmaster Pro-Lite Range

Greenmaster Pro-Lite Invigorator Plus 4-0-14 +8Fe +2MgO is a new formulation to fit within the autumn/winter turf range with higher iron and potassium content than the original Invigorator.

Over recent years, ICL’s Greenmaster Pro-Lite fertilizers have gained a reputation as an outstanding micro-granular fertilizer range, for high quality, fine turf nutrition. With eleven various formulations within the range, Greenmaster Pro-Lite offers a solution for every requirement in every season.

“The new formulation Invigorator Plus has been developed to give an improved colour response and greater longevity,” says Henry Bechelet, Technical Sales Manager for ICL Turf & Landscape in the UK & Ireland. “It is designed to sustain turf health through autumn, winter and spring and help reduce the risk of disease and moss invasion into high quality turf. We are excited about this new formulation because it contains the mineral polyhalite, which we have found can bring enhanced turf colour and quality responses.”

Polyhalite is an organic multi-fertilizer which contains sulphur, potassium, magnesium and calcium which are all fully available to the plant. Deposited over 200 million years ago, it is a complex crystal product which has been discovered at a depth of 1300 metres below the earth’s surface under the North Sea and is mined at ICL’s own mine in Cleveland.

With polyhalite now included in a number of ICL fertilizers, turf managers have been quick to report excellent results and Henry believes that this trend is set to continue with the launch of Invigorator Plus.

“This new analysis was tested against various alternatives and proved to be the best in terms of turf colour, quality and longevity. We know that the original Greenmaster Invigorator already has a loyal following and so we are running the Invigorator Plus alongside its sister formulation. We hope that everyone using Invigorator Plus this autumn and winter will see the added benefits of this new formulation.”

Please contact ICL on 01473 237100 or visit www.icl-sf.co.uk or www.icl-sf.ie if you are in Ireland.

Ralph Awarded National League Groundsman Of The Year

Ralph Awarded National League Groundsman Of The Year 2016/17: Torquay United groundsman Chris Ralph has received a top award from the Football Association for the standard of the pitch in 2016/17.

Ralph Awarded National League Groundsman Of The Year

Ralph attended an awards ceremony at St George’s Park today along with other clubs that were also honoured. He receives the award for the best pitch in the National League, and the National League North and South.

Aldershot Town, who are well-known to have an excellent surface received second place in the category.

Chris was understandably delighted with being awarded FA Groundsman of the Year for the National League: “The winning doesn’t matter, it is the recognition for the job which sometimes goes unnoticed that is the best part. There is a lot of hard work that goes into the pitch.

“I’d like to thank the club, the team of volunteers that help me on match days. People like Mark White that come in to help after match days. Assistant groundsman, Julian Gouldthorpe who is now employed by the club, but he volunteered a lot of help last season.

“Without the volunteers that help, the pitch wouldn’t come together as well as it does.”

Other factors also helped throughout the season.

“Having a dry winter helped, but what has also helped is that the Gaffer respects the pitch. He hasn’t trained on it anything like what previous managers have. When the teams does train on it, he is respectful of what I ask him not to do.”

Ralph receives this award through the judgement of groundsmen Darren Baldwin (Tottenham Hotspur) and Dougie Robertson (West Ham) who visited the ground last season.

Torquay United General Manager, Geoff Harrop is delighted for Chris to receive this award.

“We’re absolutely over the moon with this award for Chris,” said Geoff.

“Chris is a great guy and an exceptional groundsman. He works night and day to get the pitch looking fantastic and to a level that we want at our football club.

“We have put extra investment into the pitch this year and at the end of last season to maintain the high levels that Chris has set.

“A huge congratulations to him, and the team of volunteers that help the club. I’m sure he’ll enjoy the accolade. I look forward to seeing him upon his return with the trophy”.

Dennis G34D Gives The Red Bulls A Boost

Dennis G34D Gives The Red Bulls A Boost: Dan Shemesh, Director of Stadium and Training Grounds for the New York Red Bulls has reported excellent results since purchasing a Dennis G34D cylinder mower.

Dennis G34D Gives The Red Bulls A Boost

In 2009, after seven years at the Philadelphia Eagles Dan Shemesh landed the role of Director of Grounds at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey home of the New York Red Bulls MLS team.

As the Director of Grounds, Dan’s responsibilities include overseeing the pitches at the 25,000 seat stadium and training grounds, as well as maintaining the surrounding landscape. Now in his eighth season with the New York Red Bulls, the pitch has significantly improved and Dan feels that it has reached another level since trading his ride-on mower for a Dennis G34D cylinder mower.

“I had heard a lot about the Dennis G34D,” says Dan. “So we talked to other groundsmen who were using them and after glowing reports we decided to try one for ourselves. A demonstration was arranged through CS Trading LLC (local dealer) and off the back of that we decided it would be extremely beneficial to have one.”

The Dennis G34D has been designed and built following the same concept as the popular Dennis G860 machine – which is relied upon in stadium environments all over the globe. Available in three different cutting sizes – 26”, 30” and 34” – the mowers incorporate a large-diameter eight bladed cutting cylinder to cater for a wide range of uses to leave a precision cut. The handlebar design makes manoeuvring easy and the wide adjustment makes it comfortable for all cutting heights.

“We like using the machine because of the superior presentation it offers us,” says Dan. “It is simple, easy to adjust, and can be set-up in minutes – it is also comfortable, lightweight and smooth to operate. The controls are easily accessible which makes using the machine easy to control and quick to learn.”

“Dennis is a good reliable company that makes durable machines for high quality pitches around the world.”

Först To Showcase Full Range At Confor Woodland

Först To Showcase Full Range At Confor Woodland: Först, one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of high performance and robust woodchippers, is set to showcase its complete range of wheeled, tracked and PTO machines, including the new ST6 P petrol model, at this year’s Confor Woodland show at Longleat Estate.

Först To Showcase Full Range At Confor Woodland

The ST6 P, Först’s first sub 750kg woodchipper, was launched to the UK market earlier this year and is an extension of Först’s popular range of six-inch capacity machines. Powered by a 37hp V twin petrol engine, the compact and lightweight woodchipper matches the strength and performance that users have come to expect from Först’s diesel powered machines.

Visitors to brand’s stand will be able to get hands on with the product and talk to the Först experts to discuss the benefits of switching over to a petrol machine.

Also on stand will be Först’s XR8 Traxion, an 8” x 10” tracked machine that can traverse banks due to its parallel linkage system, its original ST6 wheeled woodchipper and its high performance PT8 machine, alongside the ST8, TR6 and TR8 models.

Doug Ghinn, Director at Först, said: “We are very passionate about the Först brand and how far we’ve come within the industry in such a short period of time. The diverse line-up of machines we’re exhibiting at Confor Woodland demonstrates this, as we now offer the complete range of woodchipper solutions to arborists, farmers, contractors and landscapers.

“The response we’ve had to the ST6 P suggests it’s going to be our most popular machine to date, offering the same power, performance and durability Först is known for, but at less than 750kg and using a petrol engine. As an industry heavily dominated by diesel, it’s been very satisfying to prove that there are credible alternatives as we gear up to Stage V in 2019.”

Transforming Greenock Morton FC

Scott MacCallum catches up with Mark Farnell, Head Groundsman at Greenock Morton, a man used to making the most of what he has got.

Transforming Greenock Morton FC

There is groundsmanship going on all around us at every time of day, or year, and at so many locations that it would render your Sat Nav hoarse should you set out to visit every one.

Issues are being identified, solutions uncovered with the nett result that more often than not the best result, given the circumstances, and budget, are achieved. The word budget is key here as, outside of a select few venues, money is tight and a groundsman uses his wits to bring about what he or she desires.

One such is Mark Farrell, Head Groundsman at Scottish Championship Club Greenock Morton FC, who, through an excellent working relationship with Richard Haywood, of Campey Turfcare, had his pitch Koroed in exchange for hosting an industry open day.

Mark had work carried out on his pitch which would otherwise have stretched his budget to breaking point while Campey had the opportunity to demonstrate the effectiveness of their Koro machine. In addition 70 groundsmen and women saw first hand how a pitch can be transformed in a remarkably short space of time.

“I know Richard very well and we agreed that it would be great to put on an event in Scotland and I told him that Morton’s pitch would be available to use and that it would also help us as we’re not a big club,” explained Mark.

Greenock Morton came within a successful play-off campaign of reaching the Scottish Premiership last season. Defeat to Dundee United, in the semi-finals, ending what had been a remarkable season of over-achievement for a club which had only been promoted from the 1st Division the previous year. In fact they had identified their ambitions for the year as Championship survival.

However, by Mark’s own admission, home ground Cappielow, just a few hundred metres from the banks of the Clyde, boasts the type of pitch which is not generally seen at the likes of Parkhead, Pittodrie or Ibrox.

“What we have is about as close as you could get to a council pitch in a professional football club – we have a great deal of play and the construction is not what it would be at other clubs,” explained Mark, a Mancunian, who has been Head Man at Cappielow since 2005.

“It is soil based, and that’s not changed since we started playing at the ground in 1874, and we have no drainage or irrigation. All the sand we’ve applied over the years has worked its way into the soil structure.”

But Mark doesn’t get the opportunity to nurse his pitch through a season, as there are three teams which call Cappielow home – Morton’s First Team, Morton’s Reserve Team and the Celtic Development Squad, who travel down from Glasgow to play in Greenock. “If we count only the main matches, last season we had 53 games on the pitch and that doesn’t take into consideration the community and corporate games which are also played. It’s close to 100 games a season.”

With the priority Morton’s first team games it is a real battle against the tide as Mark can often face a game on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday.

“The main problem is getting onto the pitch to do what we need to do, and do it when the conditions are right. I often find that if we’ve had a game on the Monday it will rain all day Tuesday and then a game on Wednesday and you only have time to prepare for that and not to any time to do anything other than that.”

Transforming Greenock Morton FC

Ah, the rain. Coming from Manchester Mark thought he knew all about rain. He was about to learn more. The west of Scotland does experience more than its fair share of rain with locals joking that webbed feet are an obvious give-away for anyone coming from the area.

“We used to go on about Manchester being wet but it’s wet up here, I can tell you. Last year was one of the best we’ve had recently in terms of rainfall but the year before we had over 1000mm in just four months. In the December we had 388mm alone.”

The Campey day afforded Mark the opportunity to get some work done on the pitch which would not otherwise happen. “I have a lot of poa – a lot of good poa – but the plan was to try and get some more rye grass into the surface so what we did was take off about 70% of the top surface, because the soil here is good, and leave about 30% of the strong plant. We’d never done it before and while it’s not a bad surface here, it’s never going to be one of the top pitches in Scotland as it’s overused, with no drainage and no irrigation.

“What we were looking for is a satisfactory surface for the year which will play ok,” said Mark, who added that Morton’s Manager, Jim Duffy, is happy to leave him to get on with his work and never questions or complains.

“He knows the game, been around a long time and he knows what I’m like with the pitch and leaves me to it.”

With a background in golf Mark, worked at two of the most prestigious clubs in the country, The Oxfordshire, under David Gower, and Loch Lomond, under Ken Seims, as well as at Myerscough College. So he has a strong knowledge of the grass plant and soil structure and he brings that to bear at Cappielow.

“What I’ve learned is that you have to be tough on the plant. You’ve got to be brutal on the plant to make it strong and really scarify heavily. If you just chuck on your feed the plant will just sit on the surface happy as Larry and play poorly.

“You have to leather the plant to make it strong and to work on a soil based pitch because otherwise you won’t get any root stabilisation. It is just down to proper hard core groundsmanship.”

And that’s mechanical, not chemical.

“We don’t spray for anything here. We just use cultural methods and because no two sites are the same what we do here won’t be the same as would happen anywhere else.”

It took Mark around four years to become really familiar with his pitch and understand how it worked.

“When you’ve got a surface that you use from one year to the next you do get to know where the water gathers or the dry areas are, and generally how it operates. I do get organic build up from one year to the next and I’ve got keep on top of that, but I speak with a lot of guys at the bigger clubs and they work completely differently. They are able to feed, cut, feed, cut, feed, strip out and start again so they don’t really need to know their pitch to the same extent.”

If Mark is jealous of those at bigger more glamorous clubs he certainly doesn’t show it and he has embraced his Scottish and Greenock way of life mixing with fans – he is one himself – opposition fans as well as fellow groundsmen and greenkeepers.

However, he did get a taste of life at one of the game’s giants recently when his long time friend, Paul Burgess, invited him over to Madrid to look at his facility at the Bernabeu and take in the El Classico between Real Madrid and Barcelona.

“The pressure I’m under is completely different to the pressure Paul is under. They want perfection and Paul has to deliver.”

Mark has been able to introduce one of the game’s newer innovations to Cappielow however, but not quite on the same scale as those in Madrid.

Transforming Greenock Morton FC

“I’ve got a small lighting rig for next year – 12 lamps – and it does the trick. With so many games the goal mouth areas take a pounding so the lighting rig enables me to focus on that and bring them back as much as we can.”

Mark sees the rigs as one of the key tools that have arrived in recently years, along with the DESSO pitch, but it is the synthetic pitch revolution in Scottish football which concerns Mark and their influence on his adopted country’s progress as a football nation.

“Not far off half of the 42 clubs in Scotland are now playing on artificial pitches and that has arisen for financial and not footballing reasons. If it was purely to do with first team football and providing a surface for fans to come and watch their team it would be played on grass. If Scotland continues to fail to qualify for tournaments the number of artificial pitches at our clubs may well be a reason for that. They are not going to help improve talent at a nation level,” explained Mark.

Mark is looking forward to the new season, one in which Morton are looking to build on the success of last season and they will be doing so on a pitch which is as good as can be achieved given the resources at his disposal – and the relationship built between Mark and Richard at Campey’s.

A perfect example of proper hard core groundsmanship.

Ventrac Dealer Network Grows Apace Across The UK

Ventrac Dealer Network Grows Apace Across The UK: The Ventrac dealer network continues to grow in the UK with the appointment of two new dealers – Frank Nicol Farm & Garden Machinery Ltd and Cheshire Turf Machinery.

Ventrac Dealer Network Grows Apace Across The UK

Rupert Price, Managing Director of Price Turfcare, the UK and Ireland distributor of the Ventrac 4500 compact tractor, has been busy building his dealer base since taking over the franchise in January 2017.

“We’re seeing a lot of sales momentum now following six months of extremely hard work travelling the length and breadth of the UK demonstrating the machines and attachments,” he said. “I’ve also been busy signing reputable dealers who I know will be dedicated to selling the product and, more importantly, providing exceptional back-up and support. Frank Nicol and Cheshire Turf Machinery certainly fulfil those criteria.”

The family-run business, Frank Nicol Farm & Garden Machinery was founded in 1987 in Dingwall, Ross-Shire and has grown consistently over the past 30 years, becoming a significant distributor of groundscare equipment in the highlands of Scotland.

David Nicol, Sales & Service Director said

“My father always said that so many things are just built to be sold and not to last. His view is that if you cannot service it then you should not sell it. That’s why we have taken Ventrac. It’s a very well made piece of equipment, yet easy to work on. It’s also very versatile because of the numerous attachments that can be mounted on it. We’re looking forward to getting out there and showing potential customers just what it can do.”

Cheshire Turf Machinery Ltd was established in 1996 by Steve Halley, Mark Woodward and Peter McGreevy, to supply and service professional groundscare equipment. It grew quickly and as a result of continued sales growth in the golf sector. In 2013 Cheshire Turf Machinery became agents for the Toro Groundscare range of machinery (council and sports field mowers), which enabled the business to enter a market sector which they had not previously explored.

“We are extremely pleased to be joining the Ventrac dealer network and working with Rupert Price and his team to promote the product,” Steve Halley said. “It complements our Toro brand and is a niche machine that suits both the golf and municipal contractor sectors. I’ve been in this business for many years now and I’m really impressed with the all-round attributes of this machine; it’d certainly one of a kind and is very good for multiple applications.”
