Undertaking pitch maintenance and renovations for football clubs at all levels, Owner Richard Peel prides himself on using ‘industry leading machinery to deliver the best possible results to each individual customer’. That was why, when the company won a new contract to maintain five bowling greens in the Manchester area, there was only one mower in contention to deliver the desired results. “We’d had always been impressed with the INFINICUT^® when we had seen it at industry trade shows” explains Richard, “and it was clear from posts on social media that it was going to tick a lot of boxes for us.”

After a successful demonstration, Richard took delivery of his new 22” INFINICUT^® Fixed Head mower in June 2020, from local dealer Balmers GM. “From an environmental point of view, the battery is major plus – not just as a cleaner source of energy, but the reduction in noise and vibration issues for the operator. HAV is a massive industry-wide issue, causing long-lasting damage to those using machinery on a daily basis. It’s something I’m really passionate about reducing with every piece of equipment I buy.”

One operative on Richard’s team takes care of the eight greens they now maintain, each cut twice a week. “I’ve received nothing but positive feedback, particularly how lightweight the unit is, how easy it is to set-up, adjust and control and the fantastic cut quality.” The range of interchangeable TMSystem™ cassette options was another influential factor in the purchase of the INFINICUT^®, enabling the team to conduct different operations throughout the maintenance calendar. “We also purchased the UltraGroomer™ cassette which we will use on the greens once a month, to keep on top of any lateral growth and thatch accumulations. This should mean we won’t then have to conduct more invasive removal operations come the end of the season.”

Delighted with his purchase, Richard concludes, “This combination of equipment now puts us in the best position to keep the greens healthy, playing well and looking at their best throughout the year.”

Golf clubs urged to get sun savvy: The Slip! Slap! Swing! sun protection campaign for golf launched last year, and is back on the 15^th June with a new challenge. The Melanoma Fund – the charity behind the campaign – aims to get 500 golf clubs in the UK and Ireland ‘Sun Protection Accredited’ in 2020.

Supported by 11 leading golf organisations* their mission will be to transform sun protection in golf to tackle the rapid rise of melanoma and other forms of skin cancer within the sport.

Rationale

Rates of melanoma – the most dangerous form of skin cancer – have more than doubled in the UK in the last 30 years, with incidence in women having doubled (100% increase) and for men nearly tripled (181%). It is one of our fastest rising cancers, and although still higher in older people, rates in 25-49 year olds increased by 70% over the same period*. Global cases will reach nearly half a million (466,914) by 2040, an increase of 62% on 2018 figures.

Getting involved

Skin cancer is however preventable, and by becoming Sun Protection Accredited, clubs can help members and all staff improve their sun protection habits and knowledge. Supported with free resources and up-to-date advice, involvement is quick, easy and achieved by pledging five actions:

Nominate a Sun Pro Ambassador; promoting the campaign to members/staff.
Add a sun protection statement to Terms & Conditions of play/Health & Safety policy.
Display awareness posters and promote the campaign internally, and externally on socials.
Ensure sunscreen is available in the club, either for sale or for complimentary use.
Display the Sun Protection Accreditation logo – both digitally and in the club

A golfer like me

Golfers affected by all types of skin cancer have come forward to tell their stories, encouraging others to understand the reality of skin cancer and how it can affect anyone. They have also worked with the campaign’s ambassador; PGA Pro Jamie Cundy to produce a number of short videos which will launch throughout June on social media.

Say’s Michelle Baker, CEO of the Melanoma Fund; “Small, measurable actions by many, help create big impact, so if we can reach 500 golf clubs, we will help wake golf up to the issue, and achieve a massive strike against skin cancer this year.”
